I have a weird feeling that the 2009 4 Runner will be even more closely related to a car/truck based SUV. I mean it appears Toyota has just created its off-roader vehicle with the FJ Cruiser so the Runner will probably fit between the car based Highlander and this truck.
When you buy the next generation Runner it will leave you wondering as we often do now with the 4th generation, as to why Toyota didn't just add some more off road capability to the Runner. Yet, when you are on your way to the mall with family or friends, you will smile as you appreciate the kindship of the Runner with the Highlander type of on road perks.
You may be seeing an prerequisite to a phase out or change to the 4Runner role for the Toyota corporation. It will only stick around because of the loyal owners such as ourselves. It is still a favorite treat to many of today's Toyota buyers.

I sure hope they keep the 4R and move it tword the truck off roader direction. The FJ is cool but does not fit the bill for everyone.
I will be disappointed if it flows tword the Highlander line. If that happens I probably wont buy another one.......which would suck !

:iagree: with you the FJ is not practical as a 4R and the suicide doors don't cut it for me. For people in the second row to get out, it's dependent on the driver and front passenger. I like the FJ for it's capabilities in stock form, but it's not my cup of tea and the looks leaves me with a lot to desire for.

I don't think and hope the 4R doesn't get farther from it's heritage of being a capable off-roader and being slapped with IRS. But it's possible, it could be more cush and less rugged since there's only a small number of SUV owners who actually leave pavement. I don't think it'll go to a car based SUV since the Highlander fills that niche. It would surely suck for Toyota to do that after it built up 4Runner's reputation, like the Dodge Charger, nothing like it was in the 70's. It works for marketing, but the vehicle is nothing like the one in the past. Thai's right, the next gen will probably be bigger as each gen gets bigger than its predecessor. The current Tacoma is almost as big as the T100, and current Civic is the size of the orignal Accord.
