Flat colors???

Anyone running with any flat paint or matte on their gen 4 ... Got a buddy who is trying to talk me into it (got some clearcoat fading) ... Just wondering what y'all though about that ... Looking at doing a FDE/Desert tan color (like what's on the new Pro Trd 4R and tacomas) ... Thoughts or concerns???

Plastidip is a thought ... I just kinda wanna do something more permanent ... I'm leaning towards just doing a regular paint job FDE/tan, but at the same time flat sounds kinda sick too, especially trailing (branches, rocks, other debris ...) idk just need more input!

Personally I feel the flat trend is getting played out...when the OEMs start offering things its time to dig deeper!

True, I don't know if the plastidip would hold up out in the rough stuff. and I lke to get out there allot.

So you're saying that rubbing up through branches etc didn't scuff,peel, or damage the pd?

Did you dip it yourself or have someone do it?

Branches and mud don't damage it. I've wheeled with my runner dipped and never had any issues. I've rubbed up against branches more than i should that i'm surprised my windows aren't all scratched up.

As for the dipping, I've done them myself. It helps to have an extra set of hands to speed up the process. The taping and prep is the most tedious part.

First time dip costs ~500 for the compressor, gun and the paint. Each time after that all you need to buy is paint and filters for the compressor. So the second time around its much cheaper.

There actually was a guy who posted about half a year ago who pd his truck this desert color. Ended up looking really good, but can't think of his name right now.

I have been debating this as well. . .not because of peeling, but to further prevent, and help with resale I can just pull the dip off.

Plastidip if done properly can be very durable and still look great. If you have the coin to spend the obvious option would be a wrap, but at that point you are looking at over $5k for an SUV. In regards to PD durability I have had PD on my grill/handles/badges since I bought it and I haven't had to retouch up anything and I have been through some extensive offroading areas, highway travel, and daily use where these have been truly tested.

Hmmm ... I didn't know plasti was so durable, how do you wash it? Just like normal or what? So many difficult decisions, so much money lol :ybrick: ... I got a quote from a decent painter for the flat color would be $1000 that includes my sport fenders painted black or regular paint $1850 with fenders painted black ... Or now plasti myself for $500 ... :smashputer:

I believe DuraBak coatings, much harder finish than dipping or wraps, that can be applied in any color you want. They tint to match and can use whatever finish, gloss to matte, you want. I know a guy that did his truck using a roller and he wheels his truck hard and it still looks new. The stuff is indestructable!

Damn you beat me to it. That looks really nice man, hell yeah. One day I want to raptor line mine. With that you definitely don't have to worry about rubbing up against things. And [MENTION=135220]srs034runner[/MENTION] do it man. Be the first, I love the matte look. It just doesn't have a waxy shine which I don't like buts give or take. I think it'll look awesome the sandstone (tan) is one of my favorite colorways Toyota started doing

[MENTION=135220]srs034runner[/MENTION] if you're going to do tan plastidip hurry up before i do it lol. I was going to redo mine this spring/summer in camo tan.

If money is an issue just do the plastidip. If you damage your $1k or $2k paint job its going to cost $$$ to fix and you're going to be pissed (I know I would be). With Plastidip, you just buy a few cans or another gallon depending on the damage and redip the area. That's why i'm sticking with the standard colors.

Dang so many options ... I'm gunna research that durabak and also a little more on dip side too ... But I'm still kinda leaning towards matte ... It'll be a little later this spring I've spent too much as of lately lol ... Not happy wife unhappy ______ ... So I'll give it a month or two lol need to do more research!

Damn, I guess i'll go with another color next! But definitely go for it. I would suggest just sticking with standard colors, because its easier to repair if you have any bad spots or it gets damaged (i have yet to have any ripped dip, but i did have some of it lift up because i didn't fully dry before painting).

Surprisingly it helps up really well. [MENTION=79132]Nyc-Runner[/MENTION] is also running dip and he wheels way more than I do, so he can also vouch for its durability. Our build threads are below so you can see some more pics.

Yeah plasti dip is awesome and is very durable when done right! Ask me how i know? I've not only tested it against scratches and branches but i've bounced my truck off a tree and put a nice dent in my door and it still held up fine! I've also seen my buddy who did his FJ lime green do the same and held up strong!You really can't beat it for the price..
