Flatboys rear turbo build

not to thread jack but i wonder why centrifugal blowers never caught on for 4runners? in my mustang days they were huge, and sound awesome! maybe the mounting poses to many issues

edit* just googled and they are better performers at the top end of the RPM range, so that makes sense. carry on, I want to hear turbo sounds!!!!!!

because they require RPM to make boost. We all know how these trucks HATE to rev.

There was absolutely no power, not even a flicker on the dash, or radio.

I put the charger on it the whole weekend, but haven't looked back at it yet, might get a chance on Thursday.

You ever figure out what drained your battery?

EDIT: Forgot to ask, where are you returning the oil to? Top of oil cap? Pan?

Looks like the battery is getting soft, havnt changed it out yet but I'll search something out.

Return to the oil cap but I have a sweet cooler that's been on the shelf for years I might run it through after.

Also had my best friend help out with some gauges this weekend

also finished running wires to savaging pump, and that was pretty much it. A few things left to pick over then tie it in, oh and finish the oil relocation part too I guess.

shayne

Today I finished the oil relocation lines and started the engine with oil going to the turbo and returning to the engine, all was good. Tightened down the turbo for good and finished the bov plumbing.

Tomorrow I gotta finish the waste gate, and vent the pcv and breather to atmosphere and find a signal source offa the plenum then maybe a test drive.

Pics tomorrow

So went out for a test drive, ecu might need some time but throttle response off the line is a tad sluggish and I'm pretty sure I put the 5 lb spring in my wastegate but its going to 7. Wideband is in the mid to low 13's when punching it, not ideal but I've only got about 1 mile on it so far.

I might drive it home tonight, but the highway will be crazy right now and I got 20 miles so we'll see.

Decided to drive her home and I made it !!!

Running down the highway it's bumping around 14.5 to 15 ish which makes me pretty happy. Also cruising at 60 mph it's at 2 psi which I never thought I'd see at cruise. It'll also hit 5 psi with a slight touch of the gas pedal. I definetly need to get this snow meth kit installed and a set of colder plugs.

The other thing I had to do when I got home was back the screw outa my bov a bit, I heard flutter in the turbo. Tomorrow I'll take it to work and get some more miles on her.

Isn't 14.5-15 on the wideband a little on the lean side for driving down the highway?

Nope that's about where the stock ecu will keep these engines when in closed loop. Before I put the turbo on my wideband was right around there too. My buddies Chevy Avalanche actually ran around 17 on the highway, guess that's how they get 28mpg outa a v-8. (Now its at 15 ish with the Wipple)

Im a little confused at this thing showing 2 psi when cruising down the highway, now this is the first time I used a electronic boost gauge, maybe its wonky?

How fast were you going? I'm assuming you were traveling on a flat road with little to no inclines?

Sounds wonky to me! What is it at idle and cruising around town? You can test it with a compressed air source to see if the sensor is faulty. It doesn't sound right.

Wow, that's crazy. My tuner for my nitrous fed silverado and corvette always seemed to shoot for 12.5.

Looking forward to reading more updates:playball:

His wipple under boost is around 12.8 ish, but 15 cruising. (doesn't get the gas mileage any more but he's got a wipple lol)

So a couple more thing to work out.

My timer for the scavange pump is set for 30 seconds. My drive way is a pretty good angle and I drove up it. In the morning I started her up and some oil blew outa my turbo, which ment either the pump needs to run longer or some oil is running back into the turbo. This morning I backed into my driveway and it didn't leak when I started her. At work after I shut her down I un did my drain line and there was no oil in it, looks like I might be backing in the driveway only lol.

Driving to work on the highway I threw a p0171 code, maf/O2 which didn't surprise me. I cleared it and will see if it settles down with time.

custom turbos, yup:juggle:

A few more pics

Finished plumbing for oil filter relocation, looks like it rubs but nothing comes close to touching

No muffler still

2" from turbo all the way up through the fender

blue hose is temporary for the drivers side valve cover breather, and just poked down by the frame.

Also have the pcv valve vented to atmosphere but I might pull that plastic thing out and weld a bung in to proberly run the 2 breathers to a catch can.

So I tested the waste gate with a air gauge and regulator, which showed the gate is responding good and opening, then picked up a cheap vac/boost gauge from princess auto and installed it beside my expensive autometer electronic gauge, and it shows 5 psi like the gate spring. Looks like I'm in the market for a new gauge.

Now onto the bov not responding............

Actually running a lean burn wont really give you much better gas mileage. I have tested many different afr's and its not enough to give you good gas mileage.

I would never used an electronic boost gauge. Mechanical all the way.

Should the MAF be mounted before the turbo to prevent codes from pulling up?
