Flea & Tick Treatment for your Dog.

I have a yellow lab. Bring him out into the woods often. I typically use Frontline flea and tick topical treatment once a month during the spring/summer/fall. I continue to use it but am thinking of trying to find something more effective. I have found some ticks latched recently...

For those of you who have hunting dogs, or dogs you're bringing into the woods for hiking/camping, what do you use for flea and tick prevention? What have you found to be the most effective stuff?

go with the Frontline Spray. not the drops. Way more effective and cheaper.

I've used Bravecto for the last year and it's been more effective at keeping the fleas and ticks away than the Frontline, which seemed to be less effective after several years of use. It's a pill so the active ingredient is dispersed in the body better. It's expensive though - $60 or $70 for a pill - but it's a three month treatment.

if you want to be really effective, both in terms of fleas and ticks and cost, seresto collars are the way to go. 8 months for under $100 in most cases when three treatments of frontline runs about $80 for 3 months. i use it on my own dog, and have used it on an outdoor cat at a farm and found zero ticks in the 8 months

I also use the Seresto collars with very good results, just need to remember to take it off before they go in the water.

I spend A LOT of time outdoors with my dog. Minimum of an hour or two per day during the work week and tons of hiking/camping/overnighters outdoors during the weekends - year round. The two products I use that seem to work best for me thus far are Trifexis (primarily as his heart worm med but also as flea killer/prevention) and Frontline Tritak (his primary flea and tick). He gets the Trifexis once a month all year and the Tritak in the Spring/Summer/Fall. Since there's a bit of overlap on the flea protection side, I skew the time of month he gets his meds, Tritak on the 1st and Trifexis on the 15th. I did a ton of research before committing to these meds and at the end of the day it tends to be kind of a crapshoot as to what their actual effectiveness is. For an anecdotal account - I only pulled 2 ticks off my dog this summer and I examine throughly during long outings and after all outings (ticks are all over VA and some friends and their dogs have had bad experiences, so I go above and beyond here).

I have honestly never had an issue with fleas *knock on wood* so that either speaks to the products effectiveness or the lack of fleas where I'm spending my time. I would try the Seresto collars but he doesn't typically wear a collar at all (harness 99% of the time when outdoors, otherwise nothing). At the end of the day, the best prevention is thoroughly checking your dog after an outing - fortunately for you, a yellow lab's coat is best case scenario for finding any unwanted guests.
