Hey! Sooo my 22re started overheating but only at idle, (was at Taco Bell drive thru and smelled somethin, look over and wow! needle in the red! shut that puppy off), pretty sure its the clutch fan, guessing its finally going out (Cant complain with the mileage!) soo question is..
Should I upgrade and get a flex fan? or just replace the clutch? if I do get the flex fan, is it a straight forward installation or will I need extra parts?
Im trying to keep this repair under $150, as I found a set of 35s on chevy wheels and would love to get em for Christmas if this repair is low cost.
Thanks in advance guys!

id just order a new aisin fan clutch from rockauto. it gave you this many miles with no issue, dont fix what aint broke. i would inspect the fan since itll be out and look to see if it has any cracks or anything.

Agreed! I messed around with electric fans on my 22RE for years and was never happy with it. The stock cooling system is really good if things are working properly. If you want to "shotgun" it:

- New Aisin fan clutch
- New thermostat
- New radiator cap
- Drain radiator & block, refill with coolant brand of your choice mixed 50/50 with distilled H2O

My $0.02 anyway!

Sounds good!

One more vote for keeping it OEM, stock and well-maintained, like Cruzado Blanco and JZiggy say ^^^...

Electric fan has a "performance" advantage when you're competing AND have downtime and money to have it checked between races.

Aisin liquid coupling (available for very reasonable price) have an advantage that you probably would not need to check it for the next 20 years :)

I would not be surprised either if Fan Clutch aka fluid couple is worn out.
Worn out and new fan clutch are compared here

I also suggest that you do what Prestone calls heavy-duty flush (see instructions on jar of Prestone Radiator Flush): Drain, rinse, fill with water and flushing solution, drive for several hours over your couple of days normal driving, drain and finish the process.

Even when my Corolla's coolant was a nice pink, after the "heavy-duty flush" this came out of the system:

And while you're at it, thoroughly clean your temp senders like I did to help prevent temp-related issues like hard cold starts.

I have read that you can use don't quote me on this but 10000k diff fluid for RC cars to replace the fluid in your clutch fan. The cost is around $8
anyway you can look up clutch fan rebuild and see where they have testing the different fluid viscosities

Same here, never liked the electric fan. Just do what was suggested above and you'll be just fine
