Flex some stock muscle

Toyota did a good job for a production vehicle. More would be better but you can still get places and have some fun with your DD.

Here's a couple from yesterday in Berdoo Canyon (Palm Springs, CA).

Nice pics! What size tire are you running btw and any suspension mods?

MTR 275x70x17's on stock rims.

2.5 Daystar spacer lift front and rear. 3" would be better choice.

Hanna Sliders are pieces of beauty :artist: ;):

you still don't have any rubbing issues? no problems at full turn? that last picture with the rear tire stuffed in looks really close. no probs there either? how was gas mileage affected? it's almost time for me to change out to new tires and your setup seems to be the best without having to trim anything. thanks in advance.

With the rear tire stuffed like that, I too thought the rubbing issue would be apparent. It was real close! I could not fit a key between the tire and the wheel-well but there was some light. I should have checked to see if it was hitting the bump stop at this stage. It could not compress any more I think so I think this is the case. Clearly there was no marks anywhere on the fender well when I levelled it back out and the tires had no issues - cuts or prooof of rubbing.

At full turn, in reverse, down a steep driveway the other day, the front tire on the passenger side rubbed ever so slightly on the plastic triangle in the fender-well. This was the first time this has happened and did absolutely no damage. Just a slight mark on the black plastic where it rubbed off some dirt. It will not lead me to cutting out the plastic - no benefit there. It still has not rubbed off-road or on-road in the front other than this one-off situation.

I don't watch fuel mileage much but I suspect it's no worse. The onboard trip computer shows 20.5 on highway with 2 adults, 2 children no significant luggage over a 50mile run at approx 65mph. On local roads the onboard report shows 16.4 regularly. Local roads to me is 40% sideroads and 60% freeways with a mixture of stop and go.

I do feel a loss of power since the new tires. Only seat of the pants stuff. Could be wrong. I am going to do a 30,000 service in the next week. I suspect several dirty filters etc are not helping performance. Again I am not too worried about this aspect, if I lost a few hp from these tires it does not concern me as this is definitely not a vehicle to get excited by 0-100 times ;):

I will seriously consider 285's when the 275's wear out. The usual cutting issues will be required at this stage but by then I'll have (hopefully) an additional lift, extra clearance from a new bumper front and rear and maybe some different wheels to accomodate. Until then, I am very happy with the 275's.

great answer!! much more detail than i thought i'd get!! i 've got one last set of questions if you don't mind answering them. the tread on your tires still look brand new. how many miles have you put on them? how's the wet weather traction (compared to sayyy the stock dunlop's)? i expect it to be worse, but how much worse (more vsc interference etc...)? how's the road noise (compared with stockers)? and lastly, do you feel that the performance has changed now that it's been used a bit (same/better/worse)?

sorry for asking so many questions but i just want to make sure these will fit my needs. this will also be a good reference for anyone that's looking for the tire in the future.

i'll be looking to do the daystar lift and the other tires i'm seriously looking into getting is the smaller 265/70-17 gy wrangler mtr's or bfg a/t's. once again, for imparting such wisdom, i must

:p

Only done about 2500 miles since tires were put on. Yes they still look new and still have some manufacturing "bits" between the tread despite the offroad adventures recently.

Not had much wet weather (yet) but I feel they are equal to the stock Dunlops. They are a softer compound I believe and I have been truely impessed by their adhesion characteristics.

They are noiser than stock Dunlops. Don't know how they compare to Revo's as an example. I don't find it intrusive and family didn't even know I had changed the tires over. If you like a quiet ride the MTR's are not for you. I'd look at Nittos in this case.

Offroad performance is night and day. Onroad, I think a small loss in power is noticeable but maybe made up for by a freer exhaust system eg Magnaflow muffler and no resignator.

I met a guy in the parking lot of Westfield Canoga Park tonight who had the same tires on his 05 4Runner. He loved his MTR's also but said he got a slight rub on the inside chassis rail on the passenger front at full lock. He said he had no issue with it. I think alignment settings could have something to do with this.

PS - I'd go for the Cornfed 3" lift if I were you. Later you'll wish you had once the suspension settles a bit. It won't look strange with whatever tires you get.

(obviously an OME lift be an even better choice if you have the $$)
