Flooding on start up when cold....?

Alright guys. I need a little help on this one.

When I start my 87 4runner 22re 5 speed when cold, if it doesn't catch on the first crank it will flood out. If I pull the plugs the 1st one is black, but 2, 3, and 4 all look good. I can smell gas coming out of the tailpipe. When this happens I usually just pull the EFI fuse crank it over till it almost starts, then put the fuse back in. But sometimes even that just doesn't work and I have to let it sit.

EDIT: UPDATED INFO, CHECK MY POST BELOW.

first thing i would do is a test the cold start injector.
after that i would pull the injectors for a spray test to make sure they spray a nice mist not a crazy fountain

You might do a running and rest pressure test on the fuel system. Ethanol is doing a number on the fuel systems on these trucks. You might also check for vac leaks(intake, injector o-rings, tb, etc...). After replacing our fuel pressure regulator(and EFI relay, f-pump, filter, etc..), starts in the am were much faster. Nothing in the system out right failed, but they certainly were not to factory specs and not designed to handle the ethanol(ie dries rubber). Check your gas cap, as we have gone through 2 of them.

Bumping my old thread, but I have new info.

The major problem is when its wet out. IE heavy humidity, really hard rain, or like I did stupidly last night, got a car wash. The truck wont die if it gets wet while running, and it will keep starting if its at operating temp.

The original post was with the old motor, and now I have a completely different engine in there and its still doing it, so I dont think its engine related.

So its not flooding out, something is getting wet and stopping it from starting. Once the truck dries out, it will start fine like nothing ever happened. I have NEW Plugs, wires, cap and rotor when the motor went in. This happened a few weeks ago and I was getting yellow spark, so I replaced the coil. Now Im thinking the coil control box?

Now, like I said above. I took it through a car wash last night, and it wont start this am, just turns over and over

Quick recap. New motor, same problem. Getting gas, has good compression, had weak spark before, should have good spark now with new coil, no fuses blown.. something is getting wet or damp and stopping it from firing...

I didnt have time to play with it this AM so I took my GFs car, but where should I go from here?

Yeah pretty much. I was going to check the ECU first when I got home to check for any psychical signs of wetness. There is also a control box that sits on top of the coil, my parts store buddys say I should try that next.

That would be the igniter.
Have you checked the distributor cap ? Sometimes moisture gets in there and causes starting problems.

If you have moisture in your distributor cap, an easy fix is spray the inside of the distributor cap liberally with WD40 (or something similar) and wipe it clean. I've had to do this a few times over the years.

Dist cap is bone dry. But cleaned it anyway. Went to check spark, and pulled the spark plug wire out of the rubber boot part... So now I have NEW plug wires...again..

Still no start.

Ecu is bone dry too. Is there a way I can test the Ignitor to see if its works.. as soon as I get a free second at work, Im going to dive into the FSM...

make sure the rotor is actually spinning. The past two 22re motors I diagnosed with no spark ended up kicking the gear to the side on the disty shaft. I always check that first now on those.

Im pretty sure it had spark. Last time this happened, I had spark. It was yellow, but had spark.

And this is why I can never fix this.

This morning when I left it was still foggy, it had gone from 0 degrees to 40 and the snow was melting, condensation everywhere still. Crank no start, just like it has been doing.

By the time I got home at 6pm, it was 20 again, lightly snowing, and everything had dried out. No condensation anywhere to be found, "looks" dry. Turn the key, starts up like it never happened.

:dizzy:

Car wash. When I was fighting what ended up being a bad TPS connection, the only way I could get the trouble to duplicate was wait for rain or take the truck through a car wash.
