Floor mat hook question

So I'm slowly putting my 2001 back together after an accident. I found the driver's side floor mat hook. But when I went to reinstall it this morning, I do not see what it locks into. There is a hole in the carpet, and underneath that, like a valley in the metal below, but no hole in the metal for the retainer part to snap into. Does anyone have a clue what the hook/retainer is supposed to snap into? Thanks in advance.

Just checked mine, it is the same. I have larger mats over the oem 4runner mats so never really noticed in last 13 years, lol.

I don’t have a 3rd gen, but the hook/retainer attaches to just the carpet, not the floor. Do your carpet’s holes have metal grommets in them? (Mine don’t, but I also have a different retainer setup for my all-weather mats.)

Toyota also makes a newer hook/retainer with a hole and an insert that spreads the retaining tabs out more. I don’t have the newer hooks, either.

Yup, carpet only. This is before the 'unintended acceleration" issues and Toyotas obsession with holding floor mats in place. There should be an upper and lower half to the mat hook that grips it to the hole in the carpet.

"Throttle gate" I never seen one Toyota ever do that. It was so serious they even sent those smashed cars various engineers and nobody ever found anything wrong. Kinda makes you wonder...

According to the NHTSA, and a google search by me, there are 16,000 accidents/year caused by drivers hitting the accelerator by accident when intending to brake.

Yup. None of those toyota throttles were sticking. It just got in the news and people exploited it.

Besides. If it really did stick, you put the vehicle in neutral and send it. They will implode themselves and nobody would get hurt.
