YES YES YES!! It is a stupid invention for the automobile. All that has to happen is a defective gas pedal switch to short out inside the unit and you will have full throttle. I like how the Germans corrected it by shutting off the throttle when the brake is applied. I have no idea why Toyota does not do this.

Well...it is more of the aircraft technology being ported over to automobiles...but even being in aircraft for several generations (fly-by-wire)...it is still not fool proof (aka recent f-22 crash).

My philosophy...Murphy's Law (shtt happens) and the more complicated things are, the greater chance that something will go wrong...

I just watched the Nightline segment and posted the link in the other thread.

I wonder if the event data recorder will indicate whether the driver was stepping on the gas by mistake (as claimed by Toyota) or if there was a fault in the drive by wire system. I don't know which Toyota models have the event data recorder, but I recall a disclosure in the owner's manual about it.

I just sold my trusty 3rd gen for a 05 Tacoma. Between rusty/cracked frames, broken leaf springs and potential accelerator problems I'm starting to wonder if I made the right choice.

I'm definatley going to let my wife know what to do in case our new Runner decides to accelerate. That is if 4th gens are drive by wire? I'm pretty sure they are just wanted to double check.

Yes, the 4th gen has 'drive by wire'...there is no direct linkage between the gas pedal and throttle body.

The later model 3rd gens are partially drive by wire as well. the first quarter or so is done by cable, the rest of the way is TBW.
