Florida Residents

Just wanted to see who all is from Florida and could give me some info on moving there? The girl and I are planning on moving out there either late this year or early next year. We are both born and raised in Oregon, and although its beautiful here, we are both wanting to see what else is out there. We have a 2 year old so we are looking for a safer, quieter place to live and we cant really afford Miami or most of south Florida really.

Any help is appreciated.

I live in VA, but have been to FL several times during my life. My opinion is that the West Coast of the state is much nicer - and they still speak English in most places - than the eastern part.

Ft. Myers, Naples, Sarasota, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Clearwater and other areas along the Gulf are still quite nice and the cost of living is not astronomical. If you want to live on the Atlantic side, stay north of Broward County (West Palm Beach and up) and live a bit inland.

The heat & humidity take some getting used to; but it beats the heck out of winter, snow, sleet and freezing weather. A "cold" day down there is when it gets down into the high 50s outside. LOL!

FL has no state income tax - which is quite nice; but real estate and sales taxes might be a bit more than you are accustomed to in other states. They're gonna get you one way or another, but your "net" paycheck will be better than it would in most other states.

I think GA would be a better place, although i have never lived in either place, no matter where i go in florida i caught get away from this distinctive "trashy" feel the towns give, no offense to any people living in God's waiting room. GA is nice on the other hand and there is some more land there as well.
