Flowmaster 40 series!?

So I want to buy a muffler and I was thinking about the flowmaster 40 series. Anyone running this on an 02' or 3rd gen and want to give some input. My first question is drone, do you get a lot of drone? I also don't want to sound like a highschool kid trying to impress 17 yr olds with my car. Is it obnoxious loud? i Like have a full sound thats deep and a bit intimidating, but not, "Hey everyone on this block, look at me". Lastly, performance wise how is this? does it reduce the engines ability at all or enhance it? I know flowmaster is really a performance muffler, which I am not looking for, but at the same time I don't want the performance to drop.

I've heard far to many whore stories about flowmaster. I will never buy one. Ever. Instead I would look more toward Invidia. There are a few members running their mufflers. I would go that route. It's a higher performance, and won't cause issues.

What things have you read about the flowmasters?

well I just did a bit more reading, it seems like the general consensus on the forum, for what I am looking for, sounds like a 14" magnaflow is the best idea

Do be careful with those as well. I don't know much about them but have heard many things good and bad. Good luck with whatever you get.

I ran the 40 series on my last car. Never had a problem and the sound was great. That was on a V8 tho not sure how a V6 would sound. If you go on long trips I wouldn't recommend it. I used to drive that car across the country and the exhaust noise would drive me crazy after long hours.

Well I just ordered it so as soon as I get it on I will post here what I think and how it sounds. I also plan on doing the isr delete mod in the next week or so and I already did the deck plate mod, and I read that both those in addition to the magnaflow sound great, but we'll see.

I intend on adding sound deadening under all the carpet and panels in a few weeks so hopefully if it is loud in the cabin, this material will remove most of that annoyance during long drives!

Never heard anything bad about flowmaster. you're gonna drone like crazy with a 40. I would go 44 or 50. and magnaflow a 14" would drone a lot too. 18" magnaflow wont as much, but don't go for the 24" magnaflow because it's 2 pieces welded together and that one has a lot of problems. Youtube the sounds. My girlfriend has a flowmaster 40 on a 22re and it drones a lot. I'd cancel your order and go with a 44 or 50 unless you want to be the noisy guy everyone looks at, at a stop light. There's even a guy on here giving out a free flowmaster 40 because it drones too much. all he was asking was that you give him your stock exhaust.

I have an 18" magnaflow on my GX, and it sounds perfect, not too much drone, sounds good on WOT

I bought a Flowmaster 50 Series Deltaflow for my '99 V6 in August. The 50 Deltaflow is much quieter than the 40 series. It sounded great at idle, great at full throttle, but it was flat out embarrassing when accelerating away from lights and especially driving through my peaceful, quiet neighborhood. It was such a god awful sound I had it cut off the next day and replaced with a quiet muffler. I found that the loud exhaust is a fun thing when you want to be heard but 90% of the time, I don't want to be heard and my Yota just sounded ridiculous. If I were you, I'd go with something like a 70 Series or just a quiet muffler. Also, it's not gonna help performance at all. As a matter of fact, our 4Runners love a little back pressure. Don't make the mistake I did. Just keep it quiet.

magnaflow is loud, drones inside a good bit... had it for a week then cut it off and put on a walker quiet flow SS... call me old! BTW the weld at the flange rusted through after 2-1/2 years and AA replaced (lifetime warranty) it no questions asked.

What issues have you heard about the flowmasters and these?? Not trying to cause trouble, I am genuinely curious. I have had a 40 series for about a month now. Sounds great at idle and low RPM, sounds ok at higher RPMs. Can be a bit droney I guess. I think it all comes down to personal preference.

I know this thread is old, but I figured I would put my two pennies in anyways. I have a Flowmaster muffler on my 97. The previous owner had it installed, and to be honest, I'm not sure what series it is. Are there any numbers or other identifying marks to determine which series it is?

The sound doesn't bother me most of the time. However, at first it was a bit distracting, but I quickly acclimated to it.

I like using it to "voice" my annoyance in parking lots when people are blocking my way like a bunch of glassy-eyed cattle. Just a quick goose of the throttle and people usually get the idea.

^Street creeper has it right! When someone isn't paying attention, I just hit the gas for a second and they look up! lol

I have a Thrush Welded muffler and it sounds great for a fraction of the price of a Flowmaster. It's pretty much an exact copy of the 40 series from what I have read.
