fog light mod-2000T4R w/pics

There's a few of these write ups on here- all of which are great-Tho there isnt one specific w/pics for the 2000 model. I'm no electrician, so with out pics it was all gyberish to me. Thanks again Durk for answering my questions while I was doing this.

Tools: phillips head screw driver, 10mm socket.
Parts: 14ga wire, .187 female connector, .250 Male and female connectors.

Easiest place to start is under the hood. Disconnect your battery then pull the relay for the fog lights. Its the 3rd one down and is labeled as such. Bend the front prong so that you can get the .187 connector on it and plug it back in. Run a 14ga piece of wire from that relay over the the 10amp fuse for the tail lights.

Next take your kick panel under the steering column off(4 10mm bolts)- I went ahead and disconnected everything hooked to it also(gas latch, hood latch etc) so that I could just get it out of the way. To the right of the steering column will be your light relay-( gray box in the pictures). Unplug the wires in the back of it, mine was pretty tight so just yank on it.Among all the wires there are 3 green wires in there, as well as numbers marking each one- You want pin #14 which is the GREEN WIRE WITH A BLACK STRIPE. Cut that wire as close to the harness as you can. Take the part of the wire running back over the steering column and hook it to a ground wire. I just used 14ga wire as thats what was needed for the other relay. Then I ran the ground wire out under the hood and attached it to one of the fender bolts. In the pics I used .250 connectors to splice the wire under the dash just because I already had them- there are other ways of doing it- different types of connectors etc.

What exactly does this mod do? My fog lights have never worked so I was going to replace them but when I put new bulbs in still no luck.

Yea the 00s have em, luckily there's a relay next to the battery that makes them easy to disconnect.
Josh, its simple really, only takes about 15 min to do

Tucson- what it does is allow you to use the fogs whenever you want. The factory set up would only allow use when the headlights were on and would. also shut them off while your high beams are on.

I just used your write up to do my 99, worked great until i changed a burnt bulb.

I replaced the drivers side with a 100w Hella Yellowstar and worked well for a day, but today i have no fogs. The relay is fine and I can hear it click on/off and the ground was fine as well. I even went so far as to put everything back to factory and it still wont work!

I know stock bulbs are 55w but I also know some people run 100w with no problems, although the fuse may blow. I still have a 55w in the passengers side. What did it do?!

there are so many plugs i dont even know where to start... i dont see any larger plugs to the right, just like 8-10 plug ones maybe, tried figuring out what color the wire is at the source but cant. i need like a pic of it plugged in and stuff around it or something.

Update:
I just used this thread along with another as guidance. It's a very easy mod to do that takes 10 minutes of your time. The gray box is toward the center of the t4r under the steering column.
What I noticed:

1. This mod with on the front relay tapped into the taillight allows the fogs to be used while the low beam is on (like normal) but with addition to the high beams on the fogs can be turned on and off (modded)

2. After grounding the green wire with the black stripe from the advise shown above this allows fogs to be turned on in addition to what number 1 can do but also so the fogs can be turned on with only the parking lights on.

I had a misconception as well as some others might, that with the mod the fogs can be turned on and off at anytime. Meaning with no lights on. This is not what it does but just an expansion the parking mode, low beams, and high beams.


P.s. not sure if it makes a difference but I have a 2000 4runner with the DRL box under hood removed to disable DRL lights.

Anyone got info as to what they did so that the fogs can be on without any mode light activated?

Either way, its an improvement I like having. I hated how the fogs would go on only in low beam mode. (Factory setting)

If you plugged the relay jump wire into a different fuse, (still a 10amp) say one that is always on when the vehicle is on, would that allow you to have fog lights at anytime?
