Fog Light Mod. - Not a DRL Ques.

I know the general question conerning fog lights is whether they can be used as DRL or if they can be kept on with high beams. I was wondering if anyone has taken the metal reflector off the light - the part that actually makes it a fog light. To be honest, the fog lights do little for me in conjunction with my headlights, so I was wondering if I could somehow get into the housing and remove the reflector so that the fog lights ineffect would become secondary headlights, or just off road lights. If you wanted a focused beam, you'd have to put in another reflector. The reflector in there probably deflects the light to create a fog pattern. Without a reflector you're going to have a lot of wasted light.

I believe he is talking about a cutoff (like the 'squirrel finders' in the 06+ projector housings).

Im sure there is a metal 'tab' that produces the cutoff becuase the cutoff is reasonably clean (if you drive right up to a wall you can see easier if you dont have your fogs on an independant switch)

Take the tab off and the projector should send light over a larger area, however, you want to keep in mind that fog lights are made to spread light a very short distance in front of the vehicle and spread it to the sides as much as possible.


If you removed this 'tab' you will end up with a lot of extra foreground light (which is bad on the eyes and messes with how you focus on things at night, especially on long dark freeway roads). But if youre just doing it for sh**'s and giggles then why not. Just dont install a HID kit in there....

yeah. If you look at your 4runner, there is a metal piece that almost cups over the bulb, reflecting the light back to the housing, creating the fog light effect. Since they can be turned on and off, if i removed the little metal 'cup' that goes over the bulb, then it would create more of a driving type beam rather than the fog beam...i think. Thanks
