Foggy interior

Is anyone having trouble with the front defogger and rear defroster? It seems like no matter how long I'm in the truck, it always stays foggy. It is not to the point of prohibiting me from driving, just very annoying when it comes to changing lanes etc. Any ideas. Oh, it also doesn't matter whether I use the fresh or re-circ air.

did you make sure the rear window is all the way up? because it won't work if it isn't. mine works fine. also....i've found that using fresh air instead of recirculating it clears fog up faster.

The rear window is up. I probably wasn't clear. The defroster works, just not that well. The rear window never totally clears. I still have lines of clear and fog with the defroster on. I will try your suggestion of using only fresh air. Do you use A/C or not?

I've found that when I have two or more passengers my windows are more likely to fog (this is normal, of course). The best way I have found to clear the windows is to have the air set to fresh and have the AC on (no matter what the outside temp is). Having the AC on helps to lower the humidity inside the vehicle. When fogging is really bad I take the system out of auto mode and set the fan on high, air on fresh (with AC on) and set to defrost/defog to put more air on the windows. Good luck.

The auto sometimes doensn't work 100% of the time to automatically turn on the A/C and clear up the windows. I always turn on the A/C, have fresh air, and crank up the fan speed.

Another thing that might affect your defrosting would be to properly angle those front heater vents so that they point more at the windows. Its just faster.

Thanks for the info. I will try this tonight. Have any of you heard of the Anti-fog stuff made by the RAIN-X people? Just wondering if that might take care of some of the fog on the rear windows?

Tried it but didn't like it. If I recall correctly, you're supposed to use it frequently to prevent fogging.....using the defroster was more practical for me.

I tried the Rain-X a while ago and thought it worked pretty well. Applied it once just before "winter" season and didn't need it again until the next year. It's harder to wipe clear than regular Rain-X so I wouldn't use it if I had to regularly apply it.

Fog X leaves a film on the windows that freezes in the winter time which, in turn, seems to provide a nucleation site for water particles (humidity/fog). I just keep my windows very clean, and resist any temptation to wipe the fog with my hand/sleeve--impossible task if you have passengers... especially children.

Takes less than 5 minutes total to clean the 4Runner and the Camry if you don't allow them to get too dirty on the inside.

Yes, I've seen similar products advertised on TV and in the big box home stores, but I got mine before they started carrying them.

I've seen similar products and Bed Bath and Beyond or Linens N Things, but I don't know how they will compare. The one I have works well enough and I may try the other brands when I have a few bucks to gamble with.

How does it do in the lower right and left corners of the windshield? Will I have to modify it any? If yes, that would be okay. I'll order it anyway and use it as a model to make a REAL functional one. I got tools: grunt, grunt, grunt. (if it needs serious modification maybe we could go into business together... call it the magic hand windshield wand... or something along those lines....):bonk:

Thanks for the info. I have seen these on TV but did not know they were also at those retail stores. May have to pick some up. Do you use some type of cleaner or just water with the microfiber cloth? Thanks again

I use the AC, fresh air, and CLEAN windows.

FinRxDoc, the drain on you AC system may be clogged. The moisture the AC removes does not drain, and acts as a humidifier. I just got my 4Runner, so I could not tell you how to inspect the drain.

For me, water does fine most of the time. I use an automotive window cleaner when needed. Stoner's 'Invisible Glass' and microfibers work the best.

Don't wash/dry your microfibers with fabric softener or other 'rags.' I use Simple Green.

Don't use a household window cleaner, it can damage the interior's plastic trim and dash.

I have not modified it at all and am happy with how it gets into the lower corners of the windshield. The pointed tip helps quite a bit -- the handle attaches in the middle of the paddle so you have some room to work with. Only thing I have had to watch is that there is a tab on the paddle that can scratch the dash if you're not careful....so I just watch what I'm doing. The tab controls how far the paddle can swing on the handle.

Also, I use it dry -- no chance of getting window cleaner on the vinyl inside.

Only thing to bear in mind is that the surface is larger than the small windows on the rear doors, so it may not get exactly everything. If you want more cleaning, you can always use a microfiber cloth in addition to this tool.

One more thing -- I've heard that Griot's has great customer service. But, I've not had the need to find out personally because I've been happy with everything I've ordered from him.

Does anyone make a simple hand-mitt design? The trouble I always have is my fingers slipping off of the cloth/paper towel and oil-steaking what I have just cleaned.

Any lint-free cloth will do. You don't need to go out and purchase special glass/window cleaners or towels or anything of that sort.

BTW, I agree with iFORCE, a lint free cloth is all it should take to clean your windows most of the time.

But for dirty or very foggy windows, try an automotive glass cleaner.

this is funny my 4-runner fogs up to. My proir cars was never as bad.
