8" or 9" Rims?

I've narrowed my search for new wheels down to 2 rims--one is 17x8 and one is 17x9 (17" since I have a 4th Gen Sport with the big brakes).

Common wisdom would say that the narrower rim would be better for holding the bead and would be better protected by the tire. Is the difference between 8 in and 9 in enough to make a difference in either of those areas? Am I overlooking some benefit to the 9 in rims?


I'm going to be running 285/70/17 tires--probably GY Duratracs. The truck will be doing a lot of trail runs.

Most tires in that size spec a wheel width of 7.5"-9" I would go with the 8". As you stated, it'll hold a bead better and protect the rim better. It'll look better too.

Go with the narrow rims, they will hold a bead better when you air down.
