For the 255/75/17 guys...

I've searched and read dang near every post on here but still have a couple questions. I realize some of this has been covered, but not clearly. Answers seem to vary from person to person. Thought I might get a more cleary answer from the same thread.

1. How was MPG affected by the 255 taler tire?
2. What lift is required to avoid ANY rubbing on the front?
3. Any loss of power when you punch it?
4. What tire are you running?

I understand it's a skinnier tire and lighter weight. I'm about to order either 265/70/17 or the 255/75/17. Looking at several different tires.

I would love to get better MPG but don't want a loss of power. I also will be putting spacers on the front strut to raise an inch or so, but want to know if I can get the tires and do that later.

I'm also looking for FJ springs all around if anybody runs into any for sale let me know! Thanks

I have the good year silent armor 255/75/17 They fit without a lift and with no rubbing. I just recently put a daystar spacer kit on 1.5/2.5 and they are still fine. Little rubbing after the lift when turning in reverse but nothing to be concerned about. I haven't notice a reduction in gas mileage or horsepower but haven't clocked either with before and after comparison. Do a search for the Good year silent armors. Lots of people have them without a lift and without rubbing.

Looks like different brands measure out taller and have different shape tread patterns. So IF a different brand were to rub, where would it rub? Fender liner is no big deal, Control arms are another issue.
Keep em' coming guys! I like the idea of 255's but trying to find a semi agressive a/t and not having much luck. I like the GYSA and they are on sale for 109 right now on tire rack. I'm worse than my wife, just can't make up my mind!

Yep, I got my springs from the site linked above, guy gave them to me, just had to pay shipping. The only place they "might" rub is the fender liner. I have plenty of clearance everywhere except full lock at the fender liner, then it's about 1/4".

1. How was MPG affected by the 255 taler tire? Around 1mpg
2. What lift is required to avoid ANY rubbing on the front? Lift not required but I had to move the fender liner forward to avoid rubbing.
3. Any loss of power when you punch it? Yes a little (Raced a stock 4runner with my intake and exhaust, stock beats me by half of car length.
4. What tire are you running? Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor.

I have a 1" Toytec Spacer and also just picked up some FJ coils for the front and rear. The guy just gave them to me but I gave him $30 for driving home to pick them up since he lives 3 hours away. He is a student here in Nashville. Hopefully I will have the install completed in the next month and I will be going with a 265/70/17 tire.

1 mpg better? Or worse? Better I would guess.

Just left the tire shop. Still can't make up my mind. Not very many options for 255 HOWEVER...Newton tire in Russellville can get BFG M/T for $120/tire! I don't need M/T, but it's tempting.
They also have 265's in the Mastercraft Courser C/T which is slightly more aggressive than the A/T I've been looking at. Problem is Im afraid going to a 6 ply a/t from my 4 ply street tires I'm gonna see a drop in MPG which is why I'm back to the 255's.

Dude who has them for $120 a tire?? What size?!??! Where is this place located?

Dang, that's a heck of a deal on the BFG M/T's!!! They'd look sweet on your 4runner, I actually looked at those. I just wanted something more street oriented, but that is still tempting. The place is called Newton Tire, located in Russellville, Arkansas.

Dang I wish I was local. I would snag some of those up in a heartbeat!!

The 255/75r17 BFG was a factory tire for the jeep rubicon. Apparently they made way to many and the market is flooded right now. He said he used to pay $75 for them and sell them for $100! He recently was able to sell a set for $125 / tire so they should still be avail at near the same price. I saw a truck today w/ the Kumho 265's a/t and it looked real good. If I end up with the 265 I prolly will get those. If BFG made the A/T in a 255 I would order it today, but the don't! I'm committed to deciding tonight...bear with me. And keep the opinions coming!
Oh yeah, Newton's also said they are a tire rack dealer and he can get the Goodyear A/T SA for about the advertised 109/tire...And they make that tire in a 255....So you see my delima? I'm not a huge fan of the Goodyear SA, but it's in the size I want.

Man, don't rush the tire decision, you'll have to ride on them for the next couple of years. I am in love with the 255's, they just seem like they were made for it. However, it seems you are looking at a variety of different styles. There's a lot of difference between the GY Wrangler SA and the other AT's and BFG M/T's. At the price, it's very hard to pass up the BFG A/T's.

1. How was MPG affected by the 255 taler tire? Mine went up a little. Some conditions it's the same, others (highway) it's .5-1mpg better. That's amazing to me considering I went from Mich CT's to the more aggressive GYSA.

2. What lift is required to avoid ANY rubbing on the front? I already had my slight 1.5/.5 lift installed so I can't comment.

3. Any loss of power when you punch it? There has to be a loss... It's so minimal that I truly don't notice it. I am sure if I went and ran 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile times they'd be a touch slower than with OE. The gearing is taller with taller tires which hurts acceleration.

4. What tire are you running? Wrangler GYSA's

Much more in the link in my sig... Good luck!

Great info here guys. Thanks. I think I've decided on the 255's, just not sure which. Probably leaning towards the Dynapro like Swamprider has. I'm gonna look at them tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure that's the ticket for me. Good news is my wife had the bright idea to get the cheap mud tires while they're availible and swap them out for duck season....I really do love my wife. I'll just have to find some cheap steel wheels to mount them on. Should be fun, I'll let you know what I end up with.

Hey Nashvillerunner,

Can you post some pictures when you finish your install? I am about to do the same thing to mine, so I'm always curious to see the finished result on others. Managed to find the FJ coils with bilsteins locally from the FJ forum. Going to do suspension and tires all at once when I decide on a tire...

Sure man! I am in the same boat as you finding the tire I want to go with. I am either going to install the lift a week or a couple of days prior to getting the tires or installing the lift in the morning and getting the tires installed on the same day.

Ordered a set of 265/70/17 Mastercraft AT2 today! After all my research I think it will be the best fit for what I want. They are 6 ply and cost $650 OTD. BFG AT KO's were $950 and as good a tire as that is, I just couldn't justify the price differenct.
He did confirm the price of the 255 BFG MT's, they are $550 out the door...he ordered a set just to have, so if I need a more aggressive tire later, he said they had plenty of them at that price. Thanks for all the help and I'll have pics the first of next week.

I'm sure you'll be happy with them! You may take a slight hit on gas mileage, but shouldn't be too bad. Look forward to seeing the installed!

You're prolly right about lowering my mpg, but I decided I don't have the 4runner V8 for good mpg anyway! Also, with the "summer blend" gas I should see a little better from that. Maybe I won't notice much. Worst comes to worst the tire shop said they sell good used sets all the time and they could move my used tires pretty quick if I didn't like them. No worries! Can't wait for them now!
