For those with the rear driveline clunk...

Since I've owned my runner, I've had the notorious rear driveline clunk when coming to a stop or starting to drive from a stop. The culprit is the worn out slip yoke in the rear driveline. No amount of grease helped get rid of it, it would go away for a short time then come back. The issue is grease breaks down pretty quickly in a slip yoke, enter Honda M77 Assembly paste.

I had read this stuff had a high molybdenum content, how much I am unsure but I thought it would be worth it to try anyway. Its easy to find grease with moly in it but I wanted the highest moly content possible. This stuff comes in a small tube which I hoped would be enough and it was. All you have to do is remove one end of the rear driveshaft where the slip yoke is, clear out as much grease as you can and glob a bunch of M77 into both sides and re-install. The clunk has been gone for a week now :naughty: Make sure you mark the slip yoke so your u-joints stay in phase otherwise you will get horrible vibrations

Mine has had the clunk since it was new. I have only 138K+ miles now and it will still do it occasionally. I think I've heard it once since the last oil change and I just changed it again yesterday and greased all the fittings in the driveline. It's been a while since the very first one but I would say it was under 10K miles when it happened. Starting in 2014 I've been pulling a 6500 lb. travel trailer around the US and haven't had any problems, knock on wood.

I think the issue is a lot these rigs go a long time without proper maintenance and the slip yoke is one of them. Too long without the right grease will wear it out, and no grease will wear it out even quicker. Probably why mine wouldn’t last pumping it full of regular grease.

I let mine clunk for about a year, and would even shift into neutral when stopped to get it to re clunk prior to starting. Finally got fed up and just put about 20 pumps of grease in and forgot how smooth starts and stops were supposed to be.

I believe the owner's manual says to grease all of the fittings with each oil change. I have always done this and never had a problem. When it was new, as long as it was still in warranty, I would take it to the dealership for an oil change. They never lubed anything so I quit going to them and just did everything myself. I pump grease in all the fittings until I see it come out. I still get the occasional thunk when stopped at a light but never on startup.
