I have a 5.8L V8 and a 4L V6 so I can have it my way...:p
Well if we wanna play that game.....A couple months ago I had a pick of 4.7L V8, 5.7L V8, 3.0L I-6, 1.8L 4cyl and a 700cc 2 stroke haha

Nar nar nar nar nar

j/p :D

Who know's , some people with V8's might trade them in for another V8 if multi mode was available.

Both are great engine's and have plenty of power IMO.

So is the whole point of this thread the V6 vs the V8 debate -or- multi mode 4wd -vs- Full time 4wd.

I loved the 4.7L V8 in my Tundras but opted for the V6 in the 4Runner. Although I miss the smoothness and the exhaust burble of the V8, I don't miss the 14-17mpg. So far I am averaging between 19 and 21mpg in mixed driving with my V6 4Runner. As far as the V8 4Runner having full time 4wd vs. the V6's multi-mode, that was a point I seriously considered when I chose the V6. So far no regrets.

I do love my V8 and have no regret's , the Full time 4wd work's awsome and is alway's there when you need it , BUT I still would have preferred the multi-mode 4wd system in the v8.

From having on 04 Z71 chevy Tahoe and gettting 12-13 mpg with mixed driving and it being a problem truck and costing me lot's of extra ching . I was more concerned about the reliability of the Toyota than I was the V6 or v8. I'm already getting 17 mpg mixed driving with only 1k mile's on if it stay's there an I can get 18-19 on the hiway I will be happy as a pig in chit !! I think this milage is very acceptable for a 4x4 mid size v8 w/full time 4wd.

My mom drive's a Chevy Trailblazer 4x4 with a 6 cyl. and alway's get 12-13 mpg no matter what.

I'm happy !!!!!

Finally....an intelligent and informative response.;):

Toyota offers V8 with multimode gear selector (2H, 4H, 4L)?

I didn't really intend this to be another v6 VS v8 thread, yet it's evolved somehow different than i originally anticipated. if anything, i wanted to see the discussion on multimode VS fulltime mode...

it's just that v6 on 2H mode is so much more agile and fun to drive when compared to v6 on 4H mode. since i don't give a rat's ass about MPG, i thought how much more fun it would be if V8 comes with multimode selector. so i was thinking, if enough people voted for YES, i was gonna email this thread to Toyota so thatt they'd be pressured to offer multimode selector on their V8s... at lease as an option. well it looks like it ain't gonna happen

i'm just curious and don't mean to offend anyone. i saw some people responded their choosing V6 because of fuel economy over V8s. but even V6s aren't exactly stellar in terms of MPG. and V8 aren't worse by a lot...

i went with V6 solely because of multimode selector... V8 felt just too heavy when being driven around.

Another advantage of V6 over V8, which I realized after i purchased the vehicle, is that it's got better weight-distribution ratio. V6's got something like 52:48, while V8's got something like 54:46... which should help handling characteristics of V6s a bit.

but i miss the extra power of V8... even though it's only 10% or so, i'd definately go for it if... :D :D :D

That's why I asked this in my prev. post. I apologize for myself if I got off topic and onto milage , which I also really don't care much about but having a new truck I am monitoring it a few time just to make sure nothing was really wrong ect... I would have taken the v6 over the v8 for that simple reason of the better handling and not such a heavy front end steering feeling, but the option's & color I wanted were not available to me and unforunately had to make somewhat of a quick choice ( which I don't regret at all).

The biggest and best attraction to me with the v6 was the mulit-mode and the handling difference on dry pavement.

No offence , but maybe if you would have stated what your intention's were with Toyota to send them this thread you would have been able to keep people on the actual topic better , but sometime's people get caught up in the reading of a post and loose track of what you really asking ( like I did) ....lol ,and it seem's like once someone goes off topic it's downhill from there . I've noticed that in many of my post's too......

For what's it's worth, I would like to have the multimode ability in my V8. That was one of the trade offs I had to make when I traded in my V6 for a V8. Handling is not that much different, at least in my opinion. XREAS in the SE V8 makes up a lot for whatever I lost in the V6 SR5 I traded.

I did not buy a 4Runner expecting great mileage and the 1-2mpg (city/highway) less is not a deal breaker. I was also wondering if the V8 4WD system is perhaps more robust due to it's simplicity. I'm speaking specifically to the hubs, which do not have to unlock, and the transfer case in design and operation; just a thought.

To repeat, the only thing I miss is the ability to shift to 2WD when, on a clear day, I'm on the highway traveling at high speed. This is where, according to my data on both engines, the 2WD V6 is most efficient and the biggest mileage difference occurs. In city driving the difference is at the minimum. But, that all being said, I would not trade up to a new V8 sport edition if all that was offered new was the multimode system.

Additionally, isn't it true that new 2006 V6 SR5 does not come standard with a tow package or transmission cooler and the option cost is almost $500?

If IF there was an option to have the multi-mode switch in the V8....I would like it.

That said, if there were enough switches in the V8 to have the ability to put it in 2wd AND turn off the VSC/TRAC simultaneously.....that would be the ultimate.

The fact that those systems can't be disabled in 2wd (in the V6 or in the theoretical V8 with multi-mode) kills most of the fun of being in 2wd for me anyways.

We have damn near 300 horsepower.....I wanna smoke some fuggin tires :(

When I bought my 2005 V6 SR5 I was told by one of the dealer's mechanics that the "tow package" did not include additional coolers; just the receiver itself, trailer harness connector, and ball mount kit (less the actual ball)

I don't tow much but extra trans and oil coolers would be nice for running the SoCal deserts in summer.

On Toyota's web site it shows towing kits as a separate option or part of a package:

Option Combination #A $740
- 50-State Emissions(FE)
- Black Roof Rack & Cross Bar(DR)
- Tonneau Cover(CD)
- Towing Hitch Receiver w/Ball Mount Kit(TO)

For 2006, the hitch became an option on the V6.

Hmmm... seems like the $430 tow package includes even less than what the mechanics mentioned. I've read oil cooler(s) were only on the V8, if the V6 tow package included them, I would've definately gotten it. The hitch on the V6 is a rip off, especially considering that a similar V8 style Hidden Hitch is about $150. I don't plan on doing any towing with the 4Runner and will only use the hitch for accessories (bike or ski rack). I didn't order my 4Runner with the hitch, but I do have the 7 pin wire harness connection in the rear as well as the pig-tail for the brake controller that goes in the driver's side footwell.

Good mileage is all based on someones perspective. I agree with you 100% Falls. I also traded a full size Dodge with the 360 for my 4Runner V-6. My Dodge got the same kind of mileage as your Z-71 and it was a 2x4. I could not have gone wrong with the V-8 or V-6 as far as mileage goes. For someone that has never owned a Truck or SUV and buy a 4Runner you might say the mileage sucks.

If I had been looking for a 4x4 when I purchased my Runner. Which I wasn't. Money was an issue at the time. I would have looked at the differences and may have still gone with the V-6 at the time since the V-6 had the edge on HP in 2004 and had a true 2WD setting plus a slight advantage in MPG. Granted Torque is what gets you going and the V-8 had almost 40 ftlbs more than the V-6. In a 4 wheel drive situation developing torque at a lower RPM gives you better control. It is a toss up in my mind.

Add 2 years and 35 HP to the V-8 VVT-i plus Projector head lights and led tail lights and a few dozen more improvements....... If they would offer the multi-mode..... That would just be icing on the cake. Through in the 5.7L in 2008.............. No Brainer!!! I would be fighting a bunch of you to be first in line.

i had a '03 V8 Ltd for three years; on one occasion while on vacation, i drove an '04 V6 for a few days in florida...all i can say is that there's no comparison, IMHO, between the 2 as far as the "fun factor" goes...the V6 may have had more HP, but without the torque the V8's would blow it away from a standing start, and when going off-road, the idle was enough ooomph to putt along in deep sand, it's the TORQUE baby....as for fuel mileage, the numbers are all subjective and aren't a fair means of comparing performance unless you take the 2 vehicles, drive the same roads at the same speeds for the same time or distance side by side...otherwise there are too many factors to sku the reuslts. you can't just say "i get xxmpg in my V6 vs xxmpg in your v8" because it depends on so many thigns like how fast you were going, to you crawl from stop sign to stop sign or do you floor it or somewhere in between; was it windy, did you have a full oad or empty car....all these things have a profound impact on the mileage. I used to drive my truck to work and did a number of personal mpg comparisons, just to pass the time. If i drove my V8 being very "grandmotherly" with the throttle, i could pull city driving numbers into the 16/17 range; If i drove more agressivly and used the gas more, the numbers were more in the 13-15 range...also, in the summer, mileage was better with the AC on and the windows up versus AC off windows down...

questions for the V6 Multimode - when you shift into 4H, what's the mph limit as stated in the manual? And when you go from 4H to 2H, do you have to unlock the hubs either manually or by drivign in reverse?
