For you that use Cosmoline, do you spray Rust Reformer first?

Hey everyone,

I am currently taking off some surface rust from my rig and have decided to use cosmoline to protect the frame after I wire brush it. Should I use Rustoleum Rust Reformer on the bare metal and then spray Cosmoline on top of the Rust Reformer?

My truck is now in Texas, but it was born and lived its first 8 years in Illinois, Tennessee. Nothing more than surface rust, but id like to correct and seal the frame again.

If you have any bare metal, I would personally spray it with something before coating it. I don't know if rust reformer is good on non-rusted surfaces, but I'm sure it's better than nothing!

I brushed off as much rust as possible inside my hatch, painted with Rust Reformer, then coated generously with Fluid Film. No issues so far. So the short answer is yes.

BTW, first time I ever heard of Cosmoline was in a book about WWII submarines where it was used to protect exterior weaponry from sea spray and of course submergence. Didn’t know it was around anymore.

I just did some frame repair after cutting out some rot and the guy that helped me do it recommended it. It's used at a local 4x4 shop near me as well and people tend to have good experience with it.

I believe Fluid Film just came out with "Fluid Film Black" that's suppose to be similar to Woolwax.

I'll echo the above statements. I descaled my 16 year old New England abused frame this past fall. I sprayed mine with John Deere Blitz Black frame paint and then Fluid Filmed the truck. So far it has held up well wo multiple road salted days and subsequent underbody washes (done by hand at my work with a hose and hot water)

Definitely coat it before filming. Would recommend Woolwax is you want everything you coat to be black or Fluid Film if you don't care.

Note: I have the fluid film spray gun $100 dollar item. It is DEFINITELY worth it if you have an air compressor. The nozzle attachment for going down in the frame with a 360* spray is crucial. Also the regular nozzle can be set for a nice wide spray pattern as well. The rattle cans SUCK. They are expensive and have a terrible spray pattern, and good luck coating the inside of the frame.

Yeah there is a product that I have extensively researched called Cosmoline RP-342. I have compared it against all the big products such as Fluid Film, Woolwax, CRC etc. I have decided to go with Cosmoline because of the durability. I may however use fluid film on the inside of the frame! If it is good enough for submarines, it is good enough for me!

I'd like to add an update. I will probably be using CRC Marine HD Rust Inhibitor. It is essentially another version of Cosmoline but is cheaper and more readily available. Check out project farms video if you are curious!

Lanolin is used for undercarriage preservation?! My granddad was a sheep rancher - anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 head annually until the day he died. He'd be grinnin' ear-to-ear to hear that. When I was a kid, we were coated with lanolin while marking (nut removal not of the automotive kind) lambs and sheering sheep. Was great for cracked hands.

Should've been rubbin' ewes under our trucks the whole time!
