Forced Air Induction Hood

I have a Hood Scoop on my 08 4runner, and was wondering if anyone has found a place that makes the hood scoop actually useable instead of a hood ornament.

just cut the backing or the cup out.. but all that will do is allow fresh air into the engine bay
 
it was blocked up for a reason, i would leave it that way. its not worth cutting it out and letting all that stuff into your hood.
 
I am currently working on fabing up a "ram air" set-upon my runner... go the idea from my fellow charger owners with danko set ups... the idea is to open the scoop.. then put a seal around the entire scoop... then fab up a "pan" that mounts that incorperates a filter ... and valleys "to allow any water to have a place to go other than into the motor" with a custom built intake track that runs to the throttle body... if get it finished I will run pics of the product and possible attempt to take orders if I get it functional ... of course with the reseses for water and what not it wont be a fully sealed ram air... but should still force a small amount of frest O2 into the engine... and be trick... of course... it wont be suitable for doing hood deep water crossings ... but who does those? j/k
 
Ram Air is pointless on a 4runner. I remember reading a thread proving the way the front end is designed and that it wont have air running through the hood scoop. Other T4R drivers have open their hood scoop and claimed that it never gotten dirtier or water never gets in the scoop through storms, yeah meaning almost no air is going through the scoop. Its only useful if you had something to vacuum the air in. BTW i think for every 80mph is when u actually get any performance gain of something close to 1 psi. :banana:

I gave up on opening up my hood scoop. i was thinking of sealing it up with some silicone.(water gets through it when i open the hood on rainy days)

sounds pretty useless.
 
Not sure why but I believe the Hilux Surf hood scoops are functional on the diesel versions. Do they breathe easier? Maybe you can find those part numbers and a guy like Jason at Burtmann can track them down for you. I imagine they would need to be adapted on the engine end and cost $$$. Wouldn't be worth it IMHO.

you mean to tell me there is a diesel i can put in my 4R?
 
My understanding is that the 4Runner and Tacoma have a turbo diesel option outside of North America and that the hood scoop is used to cool the intercooler much like the Subarus do.

I read that thread too. IIRC everyone agreed that due to the shape of the 4R hood, to be functional for ram air, the scoop would need to face backwards so the wind hitting the hood is forced into it.

Although this picture of the 4th gen diesel motor makes me think it must be somewhat functional.

AMAZING! This is my next purchase! Do you have any specs on the motor?
