Anyone here own a 6.0L powerstroke Ford? I really want one bad and I know all the EGR and other problems, but I wanted to see if anyone here has one and would like to share their experiences before I buy my dream truck. And for the record the 2006-2009 4runner in my dream SUV!

I got nothing, but i am like you...i think that the Ford Super Dutys are just damn cool!! They just look so much better than the Chevy and Dodge counterparts. However, i have heard that Chevy Duramax + Allison tranny combo is just about perfect.

I owned one for 5.5 years
The 6.0 started out as a problem child but they got progressivly better through the model years.
My 04 got headgaskets, egr, egr cooler, 2 transmission recalls and a wire chafing recall. All fixed by Ford. Buy an extended warranty and you will be worry free
Honestly, I loved that truck! With a SCT tuner and a street file from Innovative Diesel, I ran 13.9 in the 1/4, and got 16+ mpg while doing so.
Then I added a 4.5" lift and and some 325/65/18's on Moto Metal 951 wheels

Thanks for all the replies so far!. The reason I dont want a 7.3L the trans is a 4 speed or the six speed (I want the six speed, more fun lol) and the interior looks way outta date. dont get me wrong I'm a Ford truck guy and I wouldn't be mad if I was given one. The generation I want is an 05-07 followed by the 03-04. To me they look good and backed by a good powertrain once fixed in my opinion. ARP studs, ERG delete, etc. plus like I keep saying trucks and suv's are the perfect sleepers!!!

A good friend worked at Ford. It's been a while but IIRC the last 14mos of the 6.0L had some substantial improvements to help with head gaskets etc. The block was stiffened up and minor changes to the head design.

If genuinely interested I'll contact him and get the specifics.

FWIW, the 6.0 has been out of production since late 2007. The 08 model year saw the intro of the 6.4, which will be replaced by the 6.7 next year

Thanks man I really want to get to the nitty gritty if you know what I mean when looking at something I want.

My fiance has a 2003 6.0 and we both love it. He hasn't had any problems with it at all, but we know some people who have. He has a 5 inch exhaust on it and Edge Juice. He plans on doing a lift and getting some new tires this coming year.

Here are some pics of his:

Also, try going to PowerstrokeNation.com and reading up about them there. Its an awesome message board for diesel owners and they are all very helpful!

Nice looking truck! And thanks for the web site I'll look at that later today. I did test drive a 6.0 Ford yesterday and wasn't happy. dealer tried to rush me into buying and the truck took forever to crank for some reason so I left, and the salesman tried to look smooth saying diesel do that all the time. It looked good though ranch hand bumpers front and rear. well heres another reason why I am thankful for living in texas. diesel ford every way you turn!

Did it have high miles? Sometimes diesels do take a bit to warm up and it will sound rough when starting, espeically in cold weather. But thats expected.

Obviously you knew what it was doing wasn't right so good choice in leaving! lol

it had 86,xxx miles. it was a 2005 if that helps. I have worked on diesels but the old ones, like 12 and 24 valve cummins, lb7 duramax, and 7.3L powerstrokes. I have never worked on anything newer than 2003 in diesel land and I did basic stuff. The cranking was wierd like one crank was slow then would speed up and slow down then speed up again. it almost took two minutes to start. I might not know alot about diesels but I didn't feel comfy with it.

Ok, the word on the Powersmoke 6.0L is to check the date code on the valve cover. Beginning in 10/05 (possibly as early as 08/05; he couldn't remember) the heads were re-worked a bit and the block was reinforced to stabilize the heads. Your checking for the engine production date not the vehicle production.

My buddy and I surmised (but have no hard evidence) that any post March or April '06 truck should be fine. He also said if you find an older truck that you like check the date code on the vale cover. Several engines were replaced.

Arent the 7.3's much improved?

7.3Ls are fantastic. They come only up to the '04 model in the pickups. I think they lasted a year or two more in the cab-chassis trucks.

What's wrong with a 7.3L?
1) Primitive transmissions,
2) Loud and a bit crude (nothing like an old Cummins crude but crude compared with the D-max and the 6.0L).
3) Good examples that haven't been beat to death are getting harder to find. Their reputation as a true workhorse is well-known.
4) The '04 6.0L 4wd trucks got coilsprings and much tighter turning radius. The 7.3L 4wd trucks have leaf front springs. Pre-'04 needs a football field and several k turns to get turned around.

The new (current) 6.4L seem to be doing well overall. The 6.7L will be interesting. It's Ford's first motor without help from International.

Model year wise the 7.3L is 'turn of the century' vintage. The 6.0L came around '03-'04. '07 (or '08:confused: ) ushered in the 6.4L.

Thanks for the info. I envision owning an F350 someday just cause with a diesel.

Of all three manufacturers (chevy, ford, dodge) which diesel line is the most revered?

Depends on what your using it for and your personal tastes. I love the fords because of the way they sound and look. Cummins are good but they can't handle as well as the other two and the GM are good quite and rock solid. before the 6.0L Ford was among the best while GM had 10-15% of the market and dodge had 20-25%. Me I dont plan towing at all unless I go mudding and pull someone out. I just want the diesel as the fuel is more dense and I hear diesels last longer then their gas counterparts.

What's a better SUV? X-terra/Pathfinder or 4Runner? Who knows... All three diesel truck manufacturers have huge, loyal followings; just look at the piss on 'X' stickers on the back windows of all of them.

The Cummins in the Dodge is probably the most durable and reliable of the engines. Very few will argue that it's a great engine. The problem is it's in a Dodge. By '07 they were making a pretty nice truck but the spring vendors sucks, they ride rough stock.

The Chevy's are fast, they ride good and they're easy on fuel. The Allison transmission is pretty sweet.

The Ford's are fine trucks, pretty good powerplants AND the trucks themselves are good, comfortable and durable. They can be pretty quick too especially with an exhaust and chip.
