Hi all. I was sitting at a stop light Friday night and looked in the rear view just in time to see a Ford Expedition speeding towards me. Evidently the lady was texting or something and slammed directly into the back of my beautiful black 2005 4Runner. The hit was dead center but all of the back lights and even the tailgate glass survived. The bottom part of the tailgate as well as the bumper were damaged pretty bad as you can imagine. The worst part is the heavy steel beam under the bumper is now somewhat bent. The insurance company made out a check to me for $3700 (which is inline to what the estimate for repair came out to be) and said if unforeseen issues come up at the body shop they will work with the shop to get that handled as well. Also they will give me a rental car for 9 days while it's being repaired. My question is, would you guys just deposit the check, try to find another wrecked 4Runner with a good back-end to get parts from, and do the work yourself...or would you go ahead and get it done professionally. The kicker is, I won't get any money for how much this is going to depreciate the 4Runner with a now wrecked title...and I was hoping to get a new 4Runner in a couple of years. I have 130,000 miles on it right now. What would you guys do?

It's all depends on the overall condition on your 4runner. If your 4runner still in a good shape, it may be worth to spend several thousnand dollar to fix it. otherwise, if you feel doesn't worth to spend that much to fix it. then go to buy a new SUV. I don't know what year of your 4runner. I heard that 4runner can easly to go 200000 miles. If you still want to keep your 4runner for couple of years, it's better to fix it professionally.

Just 6 years old, it's looks prety new. I think if the drivetrain and main frame was not damaged, the truck is still in a goos shape. get a quote to see how much to fix the damage. Good luck.

The rear "beam" is the rear most cross member and it's part of the frame. The frame rails extend all the way back pass the hatch and under the bumper. Part of the reason why the 4Runner holds up so well when hit from behind.
I would let a body shop with frame equipment handle the repairs. They might need to weld in a replacement cross member.

I would have a certified collision shop evaluate your truck before making any decisions. It sounds like your truck is in good shape, so it would probably be worth fixing. It stinks about the title because the other driver was breaking the law and damaged your property. Good luck!
