Fortera Silent Armor update

Hey all...I've now had my new tires (265/70/17) for about two weeks and just wanted to give everybody an update.

These tires are everything that is advertised and then some. I've never been much of a Goodyear fan but they got these tires right. They are very smooth, super quiet, and they look great. I installed the bigger size since all the posts here seemed to indicate that there was no rubbing, and yeah, they fit fine.

No rain yet so I can't comment on the wet traction or hydroplaning resistance, but I will once our wet season gets here next month.

Two negatives - one, the tires take an awful lot of weight to balance. Where the Michelins took what, 1/4 of an ounce, three of the four Forteras took over an ounce. Two, rolling resistance is high and the MPG has dropped 3 miles per gallon. Neither one of these negatives bother me much, but for those who care about mileage, yeah, it has dropped by a good 10%.

I've read about mileage drop in the Tirerack reviews. Is the 3 MPG taking the larger tire size into consideration?

That's a good question, but I don't think that the larger tire size would be solely responsible for that. It seems as though the mileage drop is reported by drivers of all different vehicles with different tire sizes. Also, Consumer Reports indicated high rolling resistance as well in a 16 inch Fortera they tested.

3 mpg drop???

I went from 265/70 Maxxis Bravo H/Ts C load range to my 265/75 Nittos D load range and my mileage dropped maybe 1mpg and I can't imagine the Nittos rolling resistance to be better than the Goodyear's. What a rip since most people are concerned with MPGs.

It's not so much rolling resistance as it is the weight of the tires. On my old Z71 Tahoe, I lost near 5mpg going from Goodyear Wrangler A/T to the SA tire. There was a significant difference in weight which attributed to the loss in MPG and loss in accelleration. No doubt they are good tires, but heavy as heck! Remember this is unsprung weight that you are trying to spin so a little bit makes a big difference.

The typical 265/65/17 tire has a diameter of about 30.6".

The typical 265/70/17 tire has a diameter of about 31.6".

Circumference of a circle = pi * d

stock tire has a C of 96.0"
taller tire has a C of 99.3"

This makes the speedometer/odometer reading about 3.4% off.

So looks like your mpg really dropped only about 6-7% due to the other factors...

The Goodyear's are no heavier than stock so it looks like your mileage is suffering from the larger interial load of a taller tire and maybe some rolling resistance. Not to mention if you are still calculating the mpg using slightly wrong milage #'s. Interesting.

I am so want to get a better tires but I only have 24k on mine, I guess I will need to wait. Could you show me some photos when u get a chance?

Check the air pressure, it makes a BIG difference!

Gooyear Silentarmor Gas Mileage

I think the reduction in gas mileage is likely due to the selection of a heavier duty tire than is likely required. The Wrangler Silentarmours come in 4, 6, 8 and 10 ply versions. 4-ply is plenty for all SUV's and light trucks that don't do any heavy hauling or towing. If anyone who is reported an increase in gas mileage due to these tires, please reply to me if you know how many ply's your tires are. I am going to buy a set in the next couple of weks and mileage is important to me...as it should be to everyone!
