Fortera Triple Tred

After 25,000 miles on the Michelin Cross Terrians, and with an obvious alignment issue as the inner tread was just about to the wear bars, I decided to get new shoes.

Initial impression:

Handling: A big difference. Less side-wall roll, a lot less squealing, and at least a 30% increase in lateral grip.

Noise: About the same, or very slightly louder at freeway speeds.

Road manners: Very different than the Cross Terrains. You have to remember that the outer edge of the Forteras' are made with ultra high performance rubber and just the slightest move of the steering wheel initiates a turn. Which is both a good and bad thing. The good thing is it makes the 4Runner feel more percise with less steering effort. The bad is they take a little getting used to as it can feel a bit nervous if you are used to needing more steering effort from lesser tires to keep a straight track on the road. The outer edge of these tires just grip hard.

No experience with rain or snow yet, but I can assume that with the aqua channels and the special center for ice/snow, I predict they will be stellar.

I will be able to test both soon enough as I live in the Bay Area and trailer my snowmobile in the winter to Tahoe.

Oh, also they are very pressure sensitive. While 33 - 34 PSI cold was perfect on the Cross terrains, these tires feel the most stable at 30 - 31 PSI Cold.

Overall I am impressed. It transfers the 4Runner (especially if you have X-REAS) into a tighter sports car feeling of a vehicle.

If you are thinking about new tires, I suggest you give them a try. Goodyear is offering a 30 day no risk trial on these tires right now.

Because of the triple tred features, high performance rubber for handling on the edges, the aqua channels to resist hydraplaning, and because I trailer my snowmobile to Tahoe in the winter and wanted the ice zone in the center, and also wanted to stay with an all season tire.

It is truely a 4 in 1 tire

Fortera Triple Threads are also branded with the mountain/snowflake symbol. Tried to purchase 265/65/17 & currently it is on back-order at tire-rack & local tire stores - it is due to Goodyear strike at plant where this is manufactured. I probably have to wait another month.

Post feedback on the tires when you encounter snow/ice.

No ice or snow experience yet, but did get a chance to see how they do in the rain. As expected they rock. Hydroplanning resistance is awesome and they grip great on wet roads.

Ice/snow review should be coming soon as Tahoe got its first good storm late this weekend.

Over a year on mine

They are superior to the Bridgestone H/t 840's that were stock on my 03 Limited. I have had them on the truck since last Fall (except for most of last Winter, I have dedicated winter tires)

As has been mentioned they don't squeal in the turns, and they are very good in the rain. Especially in 4WD, they are very hard to break loose.

I only used them in the snow for one storm last year (Thanksgiving in fact) and they were OK. I had a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks on the original wheels in the garage waiting and those went on right after that first storm. BTW the Blizzaks rock, wet weather and snow, they really give me confidence in the truck.

I think they are on sale right now. A friend has already purchased a set for his Ford Exploder last week. He bought them due to seeing them on my truck and my impressions of the tire. He also has comented on their superior wet weather handling, although the original tires on his truck were close to having no tread left.
