found 4runner, good Deal? advice needed

Picking up 4Runner Saturday, advice?

So ive been on the hunt for a 4runner. Had found one yesterday and loved it but one person was already buying it and ended up taking it. (curse them)lol

So i found another one and will be driving about 5 hours to get it.

Its a 2006 4Runner White V8 (White wasnt my first choice, but its growing on me)

4WD w/ 39,000 miles on it and has a sunroof

With taxes and registration everything included total is $24,000

KBB Private Party Good Condition: 24.3k
KBB Suggested Retail: 27k

What do you guys think?

I am waiting on additional pics of truck to look at. From the few pics I saw, the truck is in excellent condition.

i tried to appraise on edmunds but couldnt find a place to input options included and selection of V8, etc.

This is a Sports Edition. Sorry forgot to mention. Yea the vechicle I am getting close to 22k, the remainder is mostly taxes and registration. Damn you California.

Check out NADA

This is what most states (for taxes) go by and what most banks (for loans) go by. The "Clean Trade In" is usualy said to be what a car is worth.

From what I found the car you are looking at comes out at $22325.

:iagree: Why do you think sellers always brag about being below KBB upfront? If I was just going to look at KBB, id pay more attention to the trade-in values for a better idea of a vehicles worth. However, it's good to check out all three sites...KBB, Edmunds TMV, and NADA. KBB seems to be more of a selling tool while Edmunds and NADA have more realistic pricing for buyers. In my experience, KBB is always on the high end, EDMUNDS True Market Value is usually on the lower end, and NADA is somewhat in the middle (although normally closer to the lower end).

For reference, I just bought a 2006 V6 Sport 4wd w/ 80,000 miles for $17,000 (private party). The vehicle was near mint conidition with every oil, fluid change, etc documented.

take my advice as I was in the same situation about 2 weeks ago. PUT down a deposit!!!!!!! I got a call from my sales guy at the dealership saying that they called him at home looking for the keys to the truck i was driving to look at, to show it to someone else. also make sure the deposit is refundable in case you decide you don't want it.

Clean Trade In: 22,325
Clean Retail: 26,075

EDMUNDS TMV

Trade In: 16,565
Private Party: 18,273
Dealer: 19,635

Its quite the difference between the two reports. If I look at it from the NADA report, the vehicle seems reasonable with (clean trade in) 22,345 plus tax and registration. If I use Edmunds its seems quite overpriced.

As much as I would love to be in a 4Runner tomorrow, I still realistically have 3 weeks to find me one. I have actively been searching for a mere two weeks thus far. So i also dont want to rush in it. It tends to be my downfall at times.

This truck meets my bare min requirements. I actually wanted a black 4runner sport or limited 4wd (dont care if V6 or V8) w/ preferably a JBL system in it as I drove one with it, and it seemed to work for me.

The white is actually my fourth color choice after (black, blue, gray). So the last thing I want to do is pay a premium on it.

A part of me feels I am rushing into it and compromising on some of the options as in my head, i keep thinking 4Runner with my exact specs in my budget (24k) will be hard to find in or near California. (i did find some on the east coast but with my flight out there and having it shipped back, it was way beyond my budget)

Lastly, I wanna thank everyone for their responses. Ive been on many other forums over the years, and this is one of the rare ones that actually give reasonable and non childish responses

Having just gone through my first 4Runner purchase myself, here are some thoughts.

I searched for about a month, both online and locally. It seemed to me that 4Runners hold their value very well. Check edmunds (make sure you complete the "appraise your car" process on edmunds -- select the right trim, options, and condition. You'll get a price that is closer to NADA.

But, I held out and kept looking. I finally found one a Lexus dealership halfway across the country. I paid $100 for a third-party inspection. I looked at the Carfax and also paid $40 for a one month subscription to Autocheck. I must have run fifty VIN's through autocheck during my search. This one came back totally clean. 1 owner, no accidents, etc. Make sure you check both carfax and autocheck since sometimes one picks up something like an accident that the other doesn't.

I also created an account at toyota.com/owners and registered my prospective vehicle to get the service history. Turns out this 4Runner had every scheduled service done at one Toyota dealership -- the same dealership where the owner originally purchased it.

All looked good, so I haggled and ended up with what I think was a good price. I got it down to less than the "clean trade in" value on NADA and below the private party price with "outstanding" condition on edmunds. And it was thousands less that what I was finding locally, even after paying $500 for shipping.

It's due to arrive in the next week. ;-)

First off, congrats on the purchase and thanks for some of the key points. I will make sure to run both carfax and autocheck. and i will use toyota.com/owners and see if I can trace the maintenance work on it.

That Edmunds.com seems pretty far off. I really wouldnt go by that. Seems way too low. The best way to know if your getting a deal is to see how much everyone else is selling the same car. Get on Autotrader.com and compare it to what your looking at.

yea edmunds seemed pretty off, but most trucks on autotrader and cars.com and priced around the same as they are asking. But I figured I shouldnt settle on color as I really would like a black one. I thought of looking some more to maybe find a black one. I still have a few weeks to look around. Not a big rush. The dealer didnt want to drop anywhere below 24,300 and with taking day off work and driving that far and back, it was gonna end up costing about 25. so I decided to not go for this particular one as i figured if I am going to spend 25grand, might as well get one with some more options (jbl, nav)

I went and looked at it, and liked it, but didn't love it. After I bought it, it really grew on me, and it is now one of my two favorite colors!

That's what i am leaning towards. I would have paid the asking price if it was in black to be honest. I have been looking within about a 500 mile radios. Might increase it to about a 1,000. I keep find good deals but mostly on east coast, but factoring in me flying out there to buy it and having it shipped out here (wouldnt be able to drive back due to work) it gets out of budget. So lets see. Search continues.

Yea I am aware, But white wouldn't be any easier to keep clean. Just a preference i suppose (Black, Gray, Blue, Red, Silver, then White). whites way out there on a color i would like (not saying its a bad color or anything), just not one that I would want to pay a little extra for. I would have taken it for about 22.5 plus me going out there, be about 23, but the person didnt want to drop it anything below 24.3

X 2. I know from experience the hard time I used to have with my Lexus 330. With my Silver 4R, not matter how dirty it is, doesn't show, unless you run your finger on it..:tongue:

Not at all. I would get black 4R in a heartbeat, though I have a Silver one. Well...at that time this was the best deal I could have. May be in future...:

I know color seems really important now but no matter what color you get I think you will be happy. I just got a 4runner last weekend, and its GOLD! It was my least favorite color. However, it was a great deal and I went for it. Now that I have had the car for awhile I actually like the gold. Its like a silverish gold and on the tan leather it looks pretty hot. I say look for a good deal (I promise they are out there) and worry about color later; the 4Runner looks good no matter the color. The funny thing is, white was MY favoirte color. Also, dont forget to factor all those bull**** dealer fees into the price. They can be up to $800+.

I understand and I have been debating on this white one for a while. In the last two weeks I have spend about 40 hours searching (autotrader, cars.com, toyotaforums, craigslist, dealerships around california preowned inventory) and in comparison to what I find, i think this 4runner is fairly price at about 22,000 (2006 V8 4WD Sport Edition with only 39k miles). Taxes alone come out to 1800 on it. Plus another few hundred for registration. I think for 24,300 its not that bad of a deal as most runners ive found around 22grand have about 55-70k miles on them. I am calling the guy again today, have him pay for my and my gf to fly out there (Vegas) to pick it up. So if he can slash the price 300 (that'll pay the ticket for me and the girl ), then I think Ima pull the trigger on it.
