found a highlander... got some questions

Definitely didn't come from the factory with an elocker (like bgmac said, '00 was the last year you could get it). If it has one, the PO retro-fitted it.

aw damn oh well. i got a question about this one though. its a 98 and they say its 4wd/awd but it has the knob that only has H,N,4L and the 4WD button on the side. is this one just part time or can it be awd as well... i think its part time though.

The AWD feature didn't debut until '99 (and on the Limiteds only), it stayed with the '00 Limiteds, then it became standard on all models for '01 and '02.

That '98 just has push button 4x4 - not AWD. The H position is 2wd, when you push the button on the side it's 4hi, then you have 4lo if you pull the shifter back past N. That's it, no AWD.

Most people don't know the difference between AWD and 4WD. The "AWD" capability was not available until '99. Check out this, it will answer most of your questions and help you out in the buying process. Just keep in mind that the 3rd gens had enough changes made throughout to have sub generations. Consider grouping 3rd gens into '96-'98, '99 & '00, '01 & '02.

Edit: Ok, Brian beat me to it but still check out the link

1998 Toyota 4Runner Limited, $4,995 - Cars.com

That right there just goes to show you...I thought all 98 Limited 4WD came with the locker like mine...I didn't know how lucky I was until just now! Still, thats a great looking truck...exactly what mine looked like when I bought it. And this coming weekend is my year anniversary!

so i found this 02 highlander edition but i dont know if it has the rear locker or not... cnat tell by pics but i thought that 01 was last year for rear locker?

That is the center diff lock switch. The models before 01 the center diff locked automatically when 4wd was enabled. The 01 and 02 had a different awd system that did not lock the center diff.

I cant tell if this has diff lock or not:

I'm not sure what you meant by that. The '01s and '02s do have a center diff locker, it's a button on the dash that you press (much like the rear diff locker) instead of it happening automatically with the shifter.

Automatic center diff (AWD)? Yes. Rear locker? Possible but doubt it.

EDIT: BTW, if anyone is wondering. The '01/02 system and the '99/00 LTD system perform the exact same way. You have all the same options and choice when to use them, you just choose it differently (one's a switch and one's a lever).

So this is a CDL switch and not a locker?
