Its an 02 so it wont have a rr diff lock..

That definitely the CDL switch, no rear locker in any '01s or '02s.

THAT is the biggest flaw of the 3rd gen IMO - no multi-mode 4x4 with a stick. That would be the shit w/ a rear locker too. That's what the Highlanders/Sports should have all been!

This needs to be cleared up. '99 and '00 LTD models do not have a center diff that locks automatically when in 4WD. There is 2hi, then 4hi with unlocked center diff (push button), then 4hi locked center diff (lever), then 4lo locked center diff (lever), and lastly 4lo locked center diff + locked rear diff (if equipped). It can get confusing when people refer to 4hi unlocked center as AWD. It acts like AWD, but technically AWD means all the time, cannot shift out of it.

I think calling it AWD is fine unless you're in a real techie conversation as you were saying the average person doesn't know the difference and they both basically act the same way, so when purchasing a new rig and you have no idea about this stuff, telling them it has 2wd,awd and 4x4 simplifies it for them, then again saying that in a real techie conversation makes you look stupid and like you have no real idea of whats going on in there, and wouldn't be approaite, i think for helping a newbie pick a new truck awd is

i think this kid just wants the best that the 4runners had to offer in ways of off road selection, so for the poster what he wants is a 99 or 2000 limited with the locker the next best choice if a lockers not of concern is the 00+ years then the early 3rd gens,
early 3rd gens 2wd,4x4 with locker no awd mode
mid 3rd gens 2wd,4x4,awd,locker
late 3rd gens 2wd,4x4,awd, no locker
take your pick, i see it as this ,easier to add a locker then to add a awd function.

I personally meant the center diff locks "automatically" in the '99/00 LTDs - as in there's no button to push like the '01s and '02s. And technically you are correct, an AWD vehicle is always in AWD, but I call it that when speaking of our 3rd gens because you have to have some knowledge of this particular multi-mode 4x4 system to understand the concept of "4hi unlocked". Most people who aren't coming from Toyotas would have no idea what that is, but most know what AWD is.
