Found a T4R to buy...

Hey all,

I've been watching the forums, reading up, and looking at buying my first 4Runner and I wanted to see if one I found is a good deal plus what to go look for. I'm also wondering what I might expect to pay for the below 4Runner

I found a 1998 4x4 4Runner with 168k miles, cloth interior, and the TRD package. It looks to be in good condition but as I haven't been able to inspect it in person I can't say that with absolutely sure.

When I do go look at this vehicle, what should I look/listen for when running the 4Runner?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the site.

A couple of things that I would look for would be leaking axel seals and when the timing belt was replaced. If it is the 4 cylinder then you don't have to worry about about the timing belt.

KBB lists the private party value as $3,200.

The miles seem fine to me. I would be more concerned with body work and the interior of the car.

Why don't you just post the price they are asking for it?

Also, 4Runners never came with a TRD package--only Tacomas/Tundras.

Alright, I went back to look at it and it's in pretty good condition, 169k miles on it. Sorry, it's not the TRD package, but has a differential lock button on it. There's a few small stains on the carpet the back seat area and a couple of scuffs on the front of the hood, but other than that nothing much else.

They're asking just below $7000 for it. What y'all think?

Way too high. You can find 99-00's with a little over 100k miles for $7-8k.

Depending on the overall condition and maintenance records, it's a $5k rig.

5 speed or auto?

15 inch wheels or 16 inchers?

Price seems about right for a dealership out here, should be able to do better if private seller.

Paperwork regarding the timing belt change? Likely should have been done twice now on a '98, suggested interval is 60K miles.

Run the VIN# at a YOTA dealer and be sure the spring recall was done and other maintenance that they can see via computer.
