Found a TE - Questions/Help Please?

I have found a 2011 TE. The only options listed on the specs are KDSS, Mats, and running boards.

The base vehicle MSRP is $36,555 and the options price is $2,391. So total after $810 destination charge is $39,756.

What is a reasonable price to expect to BUY this thing for? How much over "invoice"?

Thank you VERY VERY much for anything you can jelp me with here. I know it will sell quickly.

The TE appears to be a rare beast now. IMO, I doubt you will get them below $38K, possibly not below $39K.

It probably all depends on the dealer and how bad they want to sell. I contacted my local dealer through their "internet department" (one guy returning emails) and was able to get my 2011 Trail back in March, before they went radioactive, with Nav+KDSS for $37,300.

Excellent info. Thanks for the reply!

I see invoice price plus dest charge to be around $36,400. If they go $500 over, may be a decent deal. We'll see!

My dealer was offering $500 over invoice for one on the lot. He traded out for one out of state that was in the color/spec that I wanted, but settled at $1000 over invoice. He also paid $1000 for the stock tires/wheels (-TPMS sensor, which I kept) and paid off my lease free and clear.

I probably could have haggled a few hundred off that price, but when the car is not on the lot, the bargaining position is not as great.

First, tell them to ditch the overpriced running boards and the way overpriced carpeted mats...

That'll save you some money right off the bat.

Ditto, only I went thru AAA and got mine for 36,xxx with Nav+KDSS and the floor mats. I don't remember the exact amount but it was under $37k.

I would tell them to keep the floor mats, there are better options available.

Having just bought a TE I can tell you True car is pretty useless right now.. It gives you some numbers to think about but not one of the dealers I contacted via truecar would honor the quote because not one of them had a TE in stock. They all said the same thing. They don't have one on the lot - the TE is very rare right now and if they could locate one for me they, "could not/would not" offer it at the truecar prices advertised - there were only 9 within a 600 mile radius of SoCal at the time so there's little to bargain with. in my personal experience, truecar is little more than a gimmick so some dealers can get your info. I'm sure if your buying a civic or some car that flies off the lot it's more useful.

In the end I got my TE with Nav for 1k over invoice - a couple of thousand below MSRP.. There's so few of them available right now Dealers will let you walk out the door knowing someone else will buy it. If you find a dealer that has one you can bet it's probably the only one he has. If you really want to bargain wait for normal supply to resume - otherwise I don't think any dealer (none of them near me anyway) will let it go close to invoice.

I contacted the sales person who sold me my Prius and she gave me a $500 over invoice price (39,400 for TE w/Nav) two weeks ago.. I'm in L.A. I dream of the 37k price mentioned by others. I'm going to hold out for better prices in the winter.

39,400 is way more than 500 over invoice for a TE with NAV. That's close to MSRP for that package. It must also have KDSS for that price? in which case it's more reasonable but certainly not great either. If your dealer is telling you 39.4k is 500 over invoice for Nav only package they are lying through their teeth.

I agree with all the above. I found one on the lot in late May (KDSS non-nav) listed at $39,200, I offered $36,500, the dealer passed and two days later it was gone. Had a different dealer transfer one in for an additional fee and paid damn near sticker. Think they gave me $500 off just to make me feel less ****ty.

Honestly, now is a terrible time to be looking for a TE. If it's on the lot and you can get it for $500 to $1000 over invoice you'd be getting a killer deal. If you have to get one transferred expect to pay MSRP and in some cases an additional transfer fee (because some other Rube certainly will). There are guys out there who did really well, but that was in '10. Or just wait, could be as little as 3 mos. or as many as 12 mos. before a normal supply of the TEs hit lots and even then most dealers will only see 3-6 of them throughout the year. This is in line with what I'd heard from probably half a dozen dealers (in AZ anyway).

Thanks for the prior feedback as well. I don't feel quite as ****ty about the deal I didn't get on my Trail. Love the truck though. And good luck to the OP. You'll get what you want, it's just a matter of when.

The dealers aren't lying when they say that there aren't too many of these things around. If you are wanting a specific color and KDSS, then it's complete luck of the draw. If a local dealer doesn't have the model you want or a TE he can trade for another, then it's going to be tough.

After I bought my car, the dealer said every TE he's had has sold off the lot within days to weeks. The last one was sold to a person who called from overseas.

It was weird - most dealers I talked to simply weren't interested in going through the effort of getting a TE at $500 over invoice. And it wasn't salesmanship - they literally ignored my phone calls and emails and I never heard from them again.

What I did was use cars.com to find the closest dealer with a TE. I called him and told him if he could get me a car at the price I wanted, I was writing a check and signing papers that night. He was able to trade out a shoreline blue and get me the truck within 24 hours and I was driving it off the lot the next day.

Glad I bought my TE days before the Tsunami for 31700 ish, msrp 37085.00. I still have not seen one on the road since I bought it in March. I have driven in Mass, NH, Maine......none around on the road.

Yep...Good luck on trying to get a "good deal" on a TE. The dealers wont haggle on the prices because there are so few TE's out there.

Like I said in another thread about this...You want one, you're gonna pay....Either an amount way over invoice, or closer to MSRP. Just the way it is. Good luck

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I have pretty much decided to wait until something closer to normal supply is under way. The dealer said they'd go $1,100 over invoice...which I would probably have done if they would have given me something reasonable on my trade (a 2007 BMW 550i sport loaded to the max)...but BMW's buy bid was ludicrous. So - I am now going to hassle with selling my car to a private party then go see what I can find.

Oh well, they probably sold the TE over the weekend anyway but who knows.

Like I said, you'll find something before long. I believe the region you're in probably sees more TEs than others, so you could be in good shape by the time you sell the Bimmer. Let us know how it turns out.

yup theyre just arent enough out there for them to be cutting deals like they used to. i was offered msrp prior to walking out the door, no wiggle.

you would think no matter what vehicle, toyota would be trying to push some deals just to get their numbers up from the quake. good luck man.

Thanks! Yeah - It's just SO rare that I walk into a dealer and they literally are backing the exact color and model of vehicle I wanted off the transport trailer. No biggie, I am in zero hurry but would love to be done with it...hate the distraction of dealing with a team of car salesmen playing games.
