Found this hid behind the owners manual

My 99' came with the original owners manual and paperwork from the dealer when bought brand new. It also came with the last 4years with of maintenance records. So I decided to go through everything and see what's there.

And I found this

It did not come with a fob, but the in dash security indicator is there. Can I just but a replacement fob with this part number and program it?

Look under the driver's seat. Do you have some kind of "brain" under there, like a electronic box or something of the sort?
 
The ones for sale on eBay shouldn't be a problem. Mine has the Toyota logo and the rear window switch but still just looks cheap. Just make sure you get the right one, as there is more than one. :nerd:

It's a security system/keyless entry. So you can use it to lock/unlock your doors, and the alarm will go off if doors are opened while the alarm is set (doors locked) as well. If you get the correct fob, you can roll down the rear window as well (although I cannot confirm this for my 98, as mine only had the lock/unlock buttons on the original fob).

I say had because my fob got "buggy" & would lock & unlock at random times so I just took it off the key ring. I need a new fob, but have been too lazy to research it. LOL
 
I can't stand that darn button for the rear window. I have had my fob in my pocket and unintentionally and unknowingly rolled the rear window down.

It's not a good feeling to walk out to the Runner in the morning and find that the rear window has been down all night.

The last fob I had, I popped it apart and put a dab of super glue on the rear window button so it could not work.

Someone correct this if I am wrong, but the VIP you have might be the type that will detect the sound of a window breakage and set off the alarm as well. Mine Does, its a 2001 sr5 with VIP. I am not at the truck right now, but I think there is a small microphone or something located near the red LED that indicates the alarm is set.

I am certainly very happy for those of you that just found out that you have some, new to you, level of security. They, however, don't have any engine emobilizers and should only be seen as a mild deterant. Mine doesn't anyways; '99 SR5

But the window switch is used almost every day!

"NOT ME OR SOMEBODY"...? What the heck else did you have in your pocket that'd push the button? I'd never dream of taking drastic measures like you did. But then I just hang my keys on a hook next to the front door. I don't carry crap in my pockets and don't have 2 years worth of receipts in my wallet either.

And for you guys wearing "skinny jeans"... That's not what was meant when it was suggested to get into your girlfriends pants. :redbrick:

100% disagree. I love that button. I have a rear tire carrier and cannot put my key in the slot to roll down the window without unlocking the swing-arm which is a pain. That button saves me 2-3 minutes of time each time I use it. Plus on mine you have to press and hold for 2 seconds to get the window to go down.

At least they are now made for guys. The poor bas****s that started that trend actually wore women jeans...

ahh, you know large knife, Glock, other keys, coins, usually happens when I"m out working on something.

WTF are skinny jeans? Are the some kind of britches? And why would some dude want to wear them?
Seems they'd make ya talk UH......... kinda funny.

i have a 99 limited, and i like the rear window roll down but i hate it at the same time... it always opens when i dont mean for it to... but as far as the 99 limiteds go the have a immobilizer built into the key.... not sure how secure it is but i know a few people who have had their hondas stolen with a chipped key security system... (the ecu was swapped out to a non security equipped ecu)
 
Alright dudes, I have the same stuff as the rest of you (the VIP book, the box under the seat, a little blinking light next to my rear window switch that says VIP). So this is something I know nothing about. Ive seen a few of these threads on here but never took the time to read them. Shed a little more light here. What does FOB stand for? And am I correct in assuming that if I get it I will have keyless entry?

Edit:

To add another question . . . is programming something I can do myself? Or do I have to pay someone to do it?
 
First off, fob isn't the most accurate name as a key fob is technically any mostly decorative bauble attached to a key to assist in removing it from ones pocket. Originally as in watch fob.

It is actually just a remote; as in to function from a distance, remotely.

There is a sticky that explains the programming. Shouldn't be too difficult. And as you've probably read they are available with and without a window button.

Mine came with the vehicle but I understand there is more than one frequency / type and you need to research which is correct for your setup. Hope this helps.
