Fram Filters, etc.
I have used Fram oil filters for years -- in various vehicles from a 1964 Cadillac deVille, three different 5.0 Mustangs, a Chevy Chevette to a 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE. I have never had any trouble with them at all; be they the original orange ones or the ones with the black grippy stuff around the edge. I have also used Fram air filters and fuel filters from time to time.
I use OEM Toyota filters (and Mobil-1 synthetic motor oil) in my 4Runner, however, since I get them for five bucks apiece at the dealer and they stock the little crush washer for the drain plug. Besides, since it is a leased vehicle, I don't want any problems with the stealership saying that I did not maintain the vehicle properly when I go to turn it back in next January. I change the oil & filter every 3,500 miles or so......even though I could easily go twice that far if I wanted to.
In my Sentra, I use either SuperTech (Wal-Mart) or Fram oil filters - along with Mobil-1 oil. It has 82k on it and is running just fine. No oil-related problems at all.
One vehicle I used Fram filters in for the longest time was a 1990 Ford E-Series work van; and it ran fine for the first 200,000 miles, until I sold it. I put that many miles on it in only four years of driving because I made deliveries and drove 200+ miles a day.
It had a 5.0 (302) V8 engine and I just did regular oil (Castrol Syntec or Mobil-1), filter and spark plug changes. The guy who bought it from me drove it another six years, until it had 500,000 miles on it - with never having to even remove the valve covers!
Frequent oil changes with a good-quality synthetic motor oil make the difference and probably do more to help than using cheapo oil and a better filter. He had to replace the A/C system, had to put two automatic transmissions in it - and the alternator burned out on him at least once, but the engine held up for a half-million miles! The rest of the truck just started to fall apart by then, but it more than paid for itself. 500k is a lot of wear and tear, even for a work truck.
