Frame Rust

Hi all,

I am new to the 4 runner scene but have access to a 1997 SR5. Engine is strong but the drivers side frame (tubular section) has a about foot of rust in which there are now large holes. I am hoping I can revive this thing with the help of a welder. Any suggestions?

Rust to the point of making holes is a SERIOUS concern--I wouldn't even have a second thought about one that far gone. Think of rust like roaches--where you see some, there are a whole lot more you don't see...yet. I would run...away, that is.

Are you talking abut one of the main frame rails,or one of the cross pieces ?
A lot of times plates can be welded over the rusted areas.

I gotta agree with bucknutbob on this one. If there is that much rust that you can see, imagine what else there is that you cannot see. Unless you are getting it for cheap $2,000 or less depending on the year then I wouldn't even think twice about it. You're looking at a lot of very expensive work to get it fixed unless you can do it in your own.
