free nav updates????

Did anyone see this? https://toyota.garmin.com/toyota/#getStarted its says its for a Toyota navigation system and to refer to your dealer for any questions. if this is true, then that means we get free updates for life!!!

I am guessing the paid for cards has this process already done

Note: The map update will take up to one hour but may vary based on the map region. During this update your Toyota navigation system must maintain continuous power. Therefore, the engine must be running while the vehicle is parked outside or in a well-ventilated area. Before getting started, familiarize yourself with and follow all applicable laws in your area. its open maps

open maps is open source, so yes it is free for life. this is the same data garmin uses btw.

is there a garmin nav installed in any Toyota models?
 
This is intriguing. I emailed my salesguy to see what he knows. Could it be that we'll have Garmin's maps and operating system? I would love that.

Anyone know any more about this?

EDIT: "...to see what he knows". Ha. Zippo, news to him.

So it would appear at best you would get only 2 updates as the faqs say updates are once/yr. so maybe you get an initial one then one a year later.
 
I have a 2014 LE and I've been looking at the maps since I got it. I've determined that the SD card has some kind of copy protection on it doing a backup (linux dd) of it doesn't work.

I use a lot of Garmin devices so I have Garmin Express so I gave that a try. I tried the micro SD card into a SD card adapter and a USB adapter but neither were recognized by Garmin Express.

I then took the SD card out and mounted it back in my Linux computer and grepped for Garmin on the whole card and came back with nothing. Now, this MAY not be that big a deal as I imagine everything is compressed/encrypted but you'd at least think there would be a copyright file with "Garmin" in it.

So I don't think navigation in the Entune that I have is Garmin based..

Dug a bit more and the software seems to be from UConnect. Which is the same place the Dodge maps come from. Trying to use my VIN into the UConnects website yields me an error though.
 
I am going to try this with a blank sd card over the weekend and see if it works. now I just need to find one. I always seem to find them when I don't need them
 
So as I see it, takes about 4 hrs to download, 4 hrs to update, then all the fooling with adapter, etc.

I’ll just stick to WAZE on my phone with free wireless updates that typically come in while I’m sleeping and the phone is on charge. Plus updates are way more often than yearly.
 
I agree. Some people are absolutely married to dedicated navigation but Google beats all of them I've seen hands down. And it works awesome in Europe and Asia too so I have the same thing everywhere I go. Every time my father-in-law rides with me he's amazed how Google routes us around traffic jams and such - but absolutely refuses to use his phone when in his car and ends up stuck in traffic with his Garmin. To each his own I guess.

Dedicated GPS makes more sense than phone-based nav when you are in the middle of nowhere and don't have cell service... or are on a long trip and don't want to burn through your data plan while running Google Maps or Waze for 8 straight hours. For those times, I use a Garmin GPS that gets lifetime updates for free. For everything else, it's Google Maps, Waze, or Apple Maps through CarPlay.

Google Maps now offers offline mode, so as long as you know where you're going, the above points are moot.
