free nav updates????

Dedicated GPS makes more sense than phone-based nav when you are in the middle of nowhere and don't have cell service... or are on a long trip and don't want to burn through your data plan while running Google Maps or Waze for 8 straight hours. For those times, I use a Garmin GPS that gets lifetime updates for free. For everything else, it's Google Maps, Waze, or Apple Maps through CarPlay.

Don’t know for sure but I wonder if WAZE needs more than GPS. But I really am never out of cell range, even on the beaches of the NC OBX.

yes of course, waze will not work without data*

(* if you go through a short dead zone while following a route it will still show the route, it just won't be able to re-route you or show you any warnings)

You can download google maps to use offline but the size is limited and the downloaded stuff will expire if you don't refresh.

MapFactor is a free turn-by-turn that doesn't require data, you just download the states you want. I've used it on a few road trips and it works okay. I remember reading a lot of good reviews for Navigonby Garmin but it was $40

in regards to the link for this topic, didn't some of the 4th gen 4runners have garmin navigation? maybe the 4th gen trail editions? maybe that's what this link is for.

Interesting thread. My only nav sys experience is Garmin Edge 700 & 800 for bicycles. So I use the T4R OEM nav to get around. Seems to work well for me, but the "voice data entry" doesn't seem to work well for address input.

What if I make a copy of SD card from a new model 4Runner? Will it work in my 2016 model? Just curious.

Perhaps I’m naive, but it seems so tacky that they charge for the updates to entune and the maps, etc. I guess the $40,000 they got wasn’t enough? I refuse to pay a tech $80 to plug a thumb drive into my 4R.

I’m sure there are some bootleg sites which offer it. And if there are not my phone does a hell of a lot better job anyway.

2004 4 runner limited with nav sysem

does any one know which nav systen it has with the jbl stereo? i want to up date the nav system. thanks jerry
