Freshen up door hinges

This might seem silly to some, but is there a way to freshen up the pieces that keep the doors open? I recognize that there's a small slider that slides into the door, so I assume that there is some type of a compession clip that goes around that slider to hold the door open once it's fully opened.

None of my doors seem to have that resistance any longer, and that's supremely annoying to me. As such, I want to fix it. I just don't have any clue if things need to be replaced or repaired, and how to go about doing that repair. I also figured that this was a rare complaint, and probably very few if any have dealt with it, but it drives me nuts that you have to hold the doors open to keep them from swinging back on me, my wife, or my toddler on the slightest of inclines or breezes (and we're in Oklahoma, it's always windy).

Nice, but wow. I had no idea that those things were worth their weight in gold. Jeebus. The least expensive I could find them was for $80 a piece, and all of mine need replacing. I don't think it's worth $400. It is quite the annoyance, though.

IDK, I might just buy one at a time over the next year and eventually get them all fresh. I still cannot believe that they're asking that much for such a seemingly simple piece. Silly...

You might hit it lucky at a junk yard - at least for the ones that get the least wear. The only one of mine that needs replacing is the drivers because I'm usually the only one in and out of my truck, but I haven't bothered with replacing it because it just wasn't worth the money to me.

One of the first things I've learned about 3rd gen 4runners in the last week or two that I've been here, is that nearly all seemingly small simple replacement parts are going to run $50+ bucks. Want a replacement cup holder? $75 on ebay. Want a used center console lid replacement? $50ish bucks or so. Replacement visors...yep.

I know I'm generalizing, and these items can be found cheaper if you look. But I've come to realize that these trucks last so long that those who own them are always looking for small replacement parts that actually do wear out.

And for me, finding a 4runner with the stuff I need at a nearby junk yard is like finding a unicorn—unlikely.

But I'm still happy to own a 4runner!:biggrin2:

These cost $30k+ when new. I would not expect parts to be as cheap as they are for a Corolla or similar.

I have noticed that these are a common wear part on Toyota's. My backseat doors will not even stay open on the slightest of inclines. I doubt junkyard parts will be much better. Every other used 4Runner I've seen had the same issue.

I replaced my driver's door stay with the new part, I don't remember what it cost but I remember thinking:'Oh well, there's no other place to get one.'
Then, in an apparent attempt to hide the embarrassment and mental anguish of paying so much for the part, I unconsciously blanked-out my memory of what it cost.
For the record, the particular design of the door stay in this vehicle is, imo, a classic piece of half-assed engineering.
Look at the door stay mechanism in a Volkswagen or a thousand other cars and you'll see why.

Reviving a bit of an old thread here. I havent looked at an assy real close yet, but is there any way to McGiver this POS with plastic weld, JB weld, or anything vs spending 68 - 90 bucks? hell, I was ready to hack up a Nattie Lite can, but it looks more complicated than that!

Sounds like a waste of time. Your's is cracked? That doesn't happen often. You are better off getting a used one at a wrecker.

No, it just doesnt hold the door just like everyone elses. I figure for that much money there would be an alternative fix,,
