Fridge Question: Waeco CF50 Vs. Waeco CF80

So I have narrowed down my fridge selection to a Waeco based on price. I don't want to go too expensive as I have yet to see how much use it will see. I also don't want to go too cheap since a busted-ass fridge will turn around a 3 day trip in the bush pretty quick. I settled on one of these two models and the question is really just size.

Waeco CF50 weighing in at 44lbs, H19" x l25" x W14", and 50 quarts - $600

Waeco CF80 weighing in at 65lbs, H18" x L31" x W20", and 80 quarts - $750

I've also considered the Waeco CF60 but the extra size is all height(4") as it's got the same footprint as the CF50. I'm concerned about getting into it since I won't be mounting the fridge on a slide.

I feel like I want the extra fridge space but I've made due with a 50quart cooler half full of ice for years. The CF80 will basically take up half of the cargo area.

Is the family done growing?

I have the Engel MT43, but I'm looking to upgrade to a 60, simply because "adult beverages" take up so much damn room. The freezer would be nice for Popsicles too!

I have fooled with getting another 43 just for drinks, but I think the larger is a smarter move. I agree with the ice and cooler thing for years, but because it was a pain it limited the amount I'd often consider taking. With the electric cooler that's taken out, so you're home free to bring whatever.
 
I have 2 kids and thinking I've being outnumbered isn't the greatest idea. I did look at the Engel 60 and ARB 60 but they want $1000 for those and that's getting hard to justify.

The other nice thing about the Waeco is it's got this mount.

It's not fancy but with my 3rd I figure it would be just fine.

Yeah I looked into those but here are my issues:

  • No dealer in Canada
  • Can't order online into Canada
  • Metal body
  • No dedicated tie down system
  • No 50q option
I really like the plastic "ice cooler" look of the Waeco. I think it will be easier to transport and more forgiven to bumps and scrapes. For an extra $100 I'll go with Waeco.
 
If you're looking to buy based on price definitely check-out the Edgestar as someone else mentioned. I have one and I run it in my truck all the time (still haven't done the 12v constant on mod, though). I've had no issues with it so far, it's quiet, and the price was about half of what everyone else charges.
 
how do these fridges work? are they drawing a lot of power? (as in how quick it'll burn through my battery?)

Too late. These ones are half way between the ARB/Engels and the Edgestars price-wise.

There are multiple posts on them over at Expedition Portal Forum which give you power ratings and real time testing. To answer your questions they are compressor driven fridges just like your home fridge. Mine froze a glass of water last night and went down to -18c. You can run these on a single battery and it should last anywhere from 1-3 days without starting depending on battery. They are pretty much silent and built for cars and trucks.

Go over to Expedition Portal Forum and search for ARB, Engel, Edgestar, Waeco, etc and start reading.
 
i just bought a small mini fridge from target...all i need is something to keep my lunch cold and a few drinks...i just can see spending 1000 bucks on a fridge for my truck

I wouldn't spend $1000 on a fridge either..... And keeping my lunch cold isn't really the purpose of this one so......
