Front Axle Rattle, No Skid Plates

Hi all

My 03 T4R has a metallic-rattle coming from the front axle area when hitting normal road-bumps, (ie: manholes, small New England frost heave ripples, etc). My first stop was at the dealership for a normal oil change service, the tech took all the skid plates off and test drove it, but its still persisting. They said id have to schedule a service to have it fully investigated.

I had all new brakes and rotors done at the dealership about 12 days ago, no problems then.

I had new CV boots and lube installed about a month ago.

I had a 4 wheel allignment done a couple days ago, and it seems the rattle happened soon after that.

Thoughts anyone?

I had a noise coming from the front left. When going over a bump, I'd hear a clank (usually just once per bump).

The dealership wasn't clear what was causing it, but said the left front wheel bearing was bad. They replaced that and the noise is gone.

I don't remember the exact figure, but it was painful.

Could it be something like a heat shield making that noise?

Im hoping its somethng that simple.

However, this might be it: I can stick my fingers thru the wheel to the calipers and get my fingertips on the brake pads themselves..and they have a good 1/4" of play! I can move them up n down and they make a CLINK! CLINK! sound!

I DO have aftermarket front calipers and the pads are new OEM pads...hmmm....possible solution?

Will a respectable mechanic do this fix? I really dont wanna tell the dealership to do it...$$$$$$$$$$$!
