front body roll

hey guys. my rig is mostly stock 01 SR5 4wd with 185k. Its been a fantastic truck except for recent suspension issues. After replacing rears several times I have now gone with bilstein 4600s after reading a lot on this site. They have worked out great. Around the same time I replaced the fronts with cheaper store-bought struts (around 30K ago) assuming that under coils, the quality didn't matter so much. Now I'm regretting that decision as I have a lot of side-to-side roll at interstate speeds or hard cornering.

1. after inspection, the struts are not blown but coils have never been replaced. Do you guys think I have a coil problem or something else (sway bar, ball joint, etc?) by the way, tires are brand new michelin LTX AT/2, recently balanced and aligned.

2. if i'm right in thinking its a coil problem, what should I replace them with? I don't do any hard core wheeling but the truck does see a lot of snow and some light off roading. I've read a lot on here and at yotatech about coil-overs vs. quick struts vs. stock coil replacements but its all confusing on what the pros and cons are.

3. sorry for the redundant suspension posts but after searching for the last few days I can't find too many posts about front suspensions and keeping them stock height.

Thanks for the advice.

It may be your front coils but have you checked you front swaybar links? Mine were broken as well as a lot of other folks.

sway bar links and bushings all check out. obviously worn with the mileage, but not compromised in any way that I can tell.

I can't remember who but someone on here is running MOOG replacement springs which are about $80 for the front pair at partstrain.com I believe.

thanks for the tip. If I replaced the springs, do I need anything additional like coil mounts? I'm assuming all the bushings and mounts can be re-used if in ok shape? Just want to get it right this time around.

Any advantages to this option rather than a quick-strut or shock+spring assembly?

I would say the shock/strut assy is going to be your best bet. The struts themselves are around 60 dollars, and you will pay 50 bucks to have them built, so it seems like the assy is the way to go.

Here are the Quick-Struts ready to bolt up for 140 each. Seems like the way to go since it includes bushings, top plates, and everything you need to mount them up!
