Front Brake Fiasco!!!

Ok..so you guys will love this one...Last summer I put Front Pads and rotors on my 4th Gen....Found i have a frozen caliper, so i take it to the corner shop to have it replaced (they have always done good by me)....14 months and 14k miles later....

So this am..I decided to service the fronts with hope of getting the most miles out of them...to my discovery..only 3/4 of the pad was touching the rotor...I think they put the wrong caliper on the truck...

I know when i bought the rotors i had to go back to exchange B/c they sold me a smaller rotor...i had to get the larger size

So my question is this...is it possable to put the wrong size caliper on the truck?

I called the shop, he was great about it...said bring it back and he will make it right....but just the headache...

I would think that if you didn't have the proper equipment on, the truck would have pulled one way or the other. :shrug:

But... you have a good shop there and I would let it slide. Chit happens and computer database systems sometimes get it wrong. Alldata was classic for listing wrong part numbers when I was in the industry. Dude seems cool and I wouldn't mind finding a mechanic in my area like that. My local Toyota dealer (Findlay Toyota) has a lot of avid wheelers working there so I have to say, they do a damn good job, but paying the premium at a dealer for some is a hard pill to swallow. I do it, I don't trust anyone else and they always do right by me, even when I don't have an appointment.

The problem is the calipers: Sport Models and most Limiteds have a 13.2" rotors. The rest have 12.6".

The way it's cataloged for the parts store is confusing and it references 17" rims which is very misleading as most have 17" or 18" rims and not that many have the 16" rims. The pads for all the 4th gen 4Runners are the same. The rotors and the calipers are what's different based on the rotor size. It sounds like they used a 12.6" rotor with a caliper designed for the 13.2" rotor.

I am In your original post you said you bought small rotors and then took them back and ultimately had the big rotors installed??? I don't quite get it unless my theory is wrong and the installed some Tundra caliper or something... Finally, it sounds like they screwed up but to their credit they'll make it right for you. Consider yourself lucky to have a good shop. Do watch it though... You don't want to end up with 12.6" on one side and 13.2" on the other:bash:

It's very common, but it totally sucks when you have to check on the work of a shop.

You lose total trust, and of course they'll "make it right," but they should have done it right the first time.
