So last night I decided to change my front brakes and rotors.

And wow is my poor new england truck rusty...

Well the two pins that go across the calipers and through the pads anr beyond rusty, they are in bad shape and would not budge. Finally I tried spining them with a set of vise grips , But they just broke off and I was only able to get half the pin out.

Today Im going to attempt drilling the pins out. its going to suck but I have no other choise. :sobbing:

Anyone else run into this problem ?

yup. i ran into this past summer. I ended up hammering it out with a small diameter phillips screwdriver and was able to punch it out. PB Blaster is your friend. I ended up just going to the dealer and getting 4 new ones. Big improvement on the pads being released more freely when you let off the brake. GL.

I had the same problem on my 2000 (10 years 237K miles on Massachusetts & NH salty roads and seacoast). I tried to get the rear drums off too and quit after 4 hours. Pistons were separating from the castings. My solution.... I bought a new 5th Gen. No rust on those brakes (yet).

That sucks man. I thought my brake job was rough when I had to drill out a small bolt for one of the brake line mounting brackets so that I could move the caliper out of the way to get the rotor off. Also had to pound the crap out of both old rotors with a BFH to get them off, but was still a cake walk compared to what you're going through. Makes me glad to live in dry Colorado...

I had the same issue, and also had issues with my pistons! By the time we got the pins out, and found the pistons were roted, we decided to just buy new calipers! I should have taken the time to do the Tundra Upgrade at the same time, but my partner that day (dad) was getting pretty pissed, and just wanted to finish the job! As it was, we had to stop, drive 30min. to the parts store, buy the parts, and then drive back and finish the job!

In retrospect, I should have done the Tundra upgrade, but didn't want to tick off my dad any more, if we had trouble fitting the Tundra stuff on. I try to include the old man in there, when I do work on the truck, just so we can say we had a Father/son project....but he has no patience, and we often end up arguing! HA HA HA! :vader: {ha ha....ultimate father/son battle!

UPDATE: I just bought new calipers, Broke a **** ton of drill bits and just got one pin out, after having a drill bit break off in the other pin I tossed in the towel.
Plus My piston boots are shot so I figured why not.

So I found reman front calipers for 72.09 at advance auto.

I got $50 off $150 w/coupon code :VISA

( I was a few dollars short of 150 so I added something to my cart besides the calipers to get the 50$ off)

Damm what a expensive brake job! :sobbing:

When you think about it, ut's amazing brakes hold up as well as they do with all the heat cycling and wet/dry conditions they live in.

I do feel sorry for you guys that live in the rust belt though - I've seen cars that look new on the top but the underside is just complete rust.

As AKAndy said, here in Colorado it's so dry that rust/corrosion is rarely a problem.

Of course, my first car way back in the day was a '71 Chevy Vega Wagon and they came factory equipped with rust and perforation but thats another story. After a year living with that POS at the tender young age of 17, I'd have blown it up if I had access to explosives. LOL

dont forget the anti-sieze on the new caliper pins and check and clan while rotating tires! be glad you dont have a fourth gen the calipers sieze on those all the time:cry2:

had the exact same thing happen on mine as well. had to go to advance auto and buy new calipers as the pins in mine were practically welded in

Check out my new setup:

Ebay rotors , and I hit the reman calipers with some gold paint for the brembo look :thumb3:

( btw thats the right caliper bolted to the left side, I just put it on qwk for the picture)
