Front brake rattle..I'VE HAD IT!

My truck has a metal on metal rattle coming from both front brakes whenever I go over any bumps. If the brake pedal is pressed, then there is no rattle. I had the car in the dealer for a full week. They SAID they tried different calipers, pads, calling Toyota HQ and no success. They then told me this is normal behavior because the truck has "floating brake pads". I find it ludicrous that I'm driving a 44k dollar truck and have to live with a rattle box. I don't know whether I should take it to another dealer or what. Maybe I can lemon law it? It's really frustrating. They also said that they test drove a brand new 4runner exactly like mine and they heard the same thing. They said the 2006 V8s have whats called "floating brake pads". Sounds like a crock of sh*t to me. They invited me to drive it but I was in a rush. I wish that I had now. What do you guys think?

Ask them if you can drive one or two of YOUR choice and see if it happens on those. Even then I don't think it is normal so keep at 'em.

Wow, I have an '06 sport and have not noticed it. I probably would have because I consider it probably the quietest car shy of some Lexus' that I have been in. Even with the windows down I have never noticed any metallic rattle.

Good luck in getting it fixed.

It truly is perplexing. I mean, they had the truck for a week. They let me have a loaner, which by the way some big fat women backed out of her spot like I was invisible and hit it. So I was out 750 bucks which is my insurance deductable. Even though it wasn't my fault. I will probably get most of it back down the road, but that still s*cked! Anyways, I just can't figure out why they couldn't fix it. They seemed like they tried their best too. It wasn't like they didn't give a rats arse. I leased the vehicle at this dealership also. This is all very puzzling to say the least.

Sounds like your dealer actually did try to resolve the problem. Maybe you should have test drove one of the other models just for comparison. Then, you would know for sure if they are full of it.

For reference, my 06 V6 SR5 does not rattle at all. So it may be limited to certain models.

I also get a slight vibration if im turning and the wheel is 90+% turned. It's almost like the center diff is locked. So for the experts (THAI), do you think it's possible that I've been driving my rig for months with the center diff stuck at 50-50 split? If that were the case, wouldn't there be a warning light?

Not related to the brakes but this is normal for a 4x4.

I'm taking my rig to another dealer today to see if I have better luck. Let me ask you guys this, would I be able to Lemon law the truck if they can't fix it? It's been to my original dealer twice already and this will be the third time but at a different dealer. WHen I threw the term "lemon law" around, the service guy was like, "well it's not a safety concern.." It's not, but none the less, I should not have to put up with rattles coming from the front brakes on a 44,000 dollar TRUCK!

Why do service guys think everyone is a moron? First thing he asked me "did you have on oil change yet? because sometimes they don't tighten the skidplates" Im thinking DUH!!!!! WTF would that have to do with the brakes? Why wouldn't it rattle if the brakes are pressed? It's like these guys can't think on their own sometimes...they have to refer to past issues and be close minded. YOu don't have to be a mechanic to figure out that skidplates have SH!T to do with brakes. Lets see what they come back at me with.
