I like the newer. the older one looks too much like the older 4runner and when I look at it, it looks like someone smooshed the front end in to a little stubby thing without foglight holes. I like the 99+ signals better too.

I was going to buy a 2nd gen, then I realized some 96's were in my budget. I came across a 99 and I was wondering why it looked so much better. I didn't know there was different bumpers. In fact I didn't realize til I signed up here.

Glad too. I also will take color matched any day, which I don't believe 96-98 offered.
 
I went with '99+. I don' really like how far it sticks out but its better IMO than the pushed in look of 96-98 bumpers.

IMO the 96-98 bumper matches the style of the rig more than the fat lip bumper does. 99-02 bumper seems to stick out a little too much. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but that is just mine.
 
I guess neither bumper makes a big diff to me and I like both but I do like the overall design of the fatlip version since it incorporates the factory fogs into the valance and still has room in the middle for another set.
 
I much prefer the 96-98 . The above years , to much plastic for me . Since we are on those years , everyone complains about the cupholders in the 98 and under but I much prefer them , I have a dog that likes to travel from front to back and it would be a mess of the century if they were down by the brake handle ;):

At least the bumpers are interchangeable so you can still own the better ergonomic friendly '99+ but still have your flat nosed frontend too. Too many upgrades with the '99 is the reason I couldn't go back to an older model and the bumpers were my least concern.

I didnt get a choice on what model i wanted, i didnt even know i was getting a 4runner, My dad came home from work one day and said they got a 4runner for $1800 on an auction and they knew you needed a car. I took what i could get, i hear you though.
 
I like both, but if I had to choose, it would be 98. 99-02 just seem a little too "mall"-ish. I do like the headlights better, though. However, this bumper trumps both of the stock versions:

I concur, i wanted to revive this thread for more opinions, seeing as it is dead even.
 
I'm going with the 99+ bumpers. I've got a 98' SR5 and love it but I do wish I had a 99' bumper for 2 reasons: I like the headlights better and it has stock fogs on it which makes the difference for me. I really miss not having fogs on my 98' bumper but I'm planning on putting some PIAA fogs on my bumper just like Rdgt4r did on his rig. I think it looks sweet and really clean!

They had stock fogs on the 96 98 bumper, and the headlights can be transfered between, irrelevant to the bumper.

The headlights aren't even part of the bumper.

Are the fogs that bright? I always thought they were kind of dim.
