Front diff ?????'s

How would I identify my front diff. In reference to i'm looking at replacing the axle shaft bearings and they have the following note "4WD, IFS 7.5 in., 6.7 in. Ring Gear " I have a 1998 Sr5 manual with a 3.4. I also have found a used diff with a note of " 1996-00 Toyota Tacoma 4Runner Front Axle Carrier Auto Disconnect 4.10 Ratio Differential." Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Your front diff will be a high pinion 7.5 reverse cut. similar to the tacoma front diff.
 
All 3rd gens come with a high pinion 7.5 front diff. It's the gear ratio that you have to be sure to have correct as it has to match the rear gear ratio. The automatic disconnect (aka ADD) was in majority of the 3rd gens but not all. That system is actually obtained through a tube like piece that connects to the side of the diff. Well I thought I was going to be able to replace the needle bearings. After removing the diff the afternoon I found that now only were the bearings completely tore up from the axle shaft breaking there is also two teeth sheared off of the ring gear so looks like I'm going to be putting in a used diff. Any advice on how to go about finding out what gear ratio I have?
 
count the number of teeth on the ring gear and number of the pinion, and divide the to and that will give you your ratio.
 
^^ what he said.. Divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by number of teeth on pinion.

Wonder how you managed to chip a tooth. I've done some pretty hard wheeling and never done it (knock on wood) so you must have had some issues going on in there.

Yea i was very surprised to see that the teeth were broken myself. It started out as an axle shaft sheared in half inside the diff. The only thing i can think is that the needle bearings got wedged in the ring and pinion thus creating catastrophic failure:happens:
