Front Differential / 4wd issues

Hey everyone. 2002 4Runner SR5.

I'm having issues with my 4wd system.

For starters, I've been procrastinating changing out both of my CVs for far too long, I figured worst case they break and I have to fix them right away.

Last week I was driving in a pretty gnarly snowstorm. The following day when I pressed the button to disengage 4wd (i think its technically AWD in the 02 model), I felt a vibration, a sort of rumbling vibrating type sound, and a general feeling of resistance from the front end. The lights on the dash that indicate it is switching between 2 and 4wd stayed on for a very long time while driving. Eventually, it shifted into 2wd and the vibration/resistance/noise stopped.

It does this whether shifting into or out of 4wd. It will usually eventually shift, sometimes this happens easier if I stop and drive it back and forth short distances..

The day after this all began I decided maybe this was an indicator it was time to replace those CVs. I've now replaced both sides and this issue has not gone away.

If I go straight into 4 Low from a stopped position I have no issues, but If im trying to just hit the button to go into AWD while rolling slow it has major issues.

I'm thinking perhaps running with bad CVs for so long has damaged my front diff? I guess I'm looking for some guidance on where to start troubleshooting this issue. Thanks in advance for any replies and please let me know if I can provide any more information to help narrow it down.
