For the entire transfer case? I doubt it. I know you can replace the seals. I've had to do it a few times.

Unfortunately not. The input shaft and both output shafts have seals. There's no way to tell which one is leaking. The only way that you'll be able to find out where the leak is coming from is to really clean the entire transfer case with Simple Green or some other grease cutter, fill it with fluid, and see where it leaks out.

When my Tacoma developed a leak there were drops of fluid on the garage floor and it was really easy to tell that they were coming from the rear output shaft seal.

It could also be coming from where the actuator (black box) mates with the transfer case. If that's where it's coming from, I have no advice for you. I've never done any work on that piece.

Well on the bright side if adding fluid takes care of the noise then I've found the problem. Since it's going to leak again I'm not spending $$ on royal purple just yet.

There are threads relating to replacing the actuator that might answer your question.
You have to split the cases to replace the actuator, and its one of those things where you might as well replace the shaft seals while your there. Thus, those part numbers should be available in said thread.

So I already worked on the rear end and it wasn't that so now I know for sure that it's the front. Any idea what it could be ?I'm guessing front axle but how can I tell without ripping it all apart?

Same issue here, thought it was something terrible and there was no possible way sway bar bushings could cause this horrific sound.


It was my sway bar bushings.

Check em and replace them regardless. You will be amazed.

The clunk remains.... I installed the new sway bar bushings and filled up my transfer case. on the bright side my four wheel low and my difflock both engage much faster. Any ideas? I'm thinking about taking it in to a shop and just having them tell me what to fix lol

I am currently having the same problem, front end clunks loudly (kind of sounds like a machine gun) while accelerating or going up a hill. Is this the famous driveshaft clunk?

I'm very curious to see what this turns out to be.

I kinda want to revisit lubing the driveshaft. After doing some more reading I only hit the zerk fittings. I noticed there are more points to hit on the rear driveshaft. How do I go about doing that?

I'm pretty sure that the only points on the driveshaft that need lube are the zerks. Just be sure to get them all.

Just had a crazy thought I already tried the zero point calibration and it didn't work. Since my VSC off, VSC track, and my ABS lights are still on maybe it has something to do with the noise issue and they can pull a code. Then I'll have a better idea of where to look. I also took some pictures while I was down there maybe you guys see some problems that I don't a couple of cv boots were soaked in fluid and some bushing on the UCA. One sway bar end link looked visibly torn. Last thing. Is it possible to overlubricate the driveshaft? The zerk that puts grease on the splines were and they join together. Is that the slip joint? I filled it until they started to separate then stopped on the front (which I did second) I think I overdid it on the rear drive shaft I didn't stop until 3 or 4 pumps after they started to separate because I didn't realize what was happening. I was gonna pull the zerk fitting and jump on the bumper to try and squeeze some out.

That sway bar end in the 2nd picture looks shot. Other than that, I don't see anything out of place.

I pulled the zerk fittings on the front and rear driveshafts and the rear driveshaft started to leak grease immediately. After jumpin on the rear bumper it dropped about a half dollar sized mountain of grease.


So I was just under the car. Jacked it up and I noticed that both rear lower control arm bushings look shot on passenger and driver side
