Mine never worked very well either. For $100 you can get the manual Aisan hubs used and that will probably fix your problem. Besides, you'll end up swapping them eventually so you might as well do it now.
OK, so try this. Go ahead and remove the Auto Locks from your front wheels. They won't effect the integrity of the wheel/roter function, you just won't be able to lock your front hubs. If the problem goes away, you know that was it and you can basically put the covers back on and run them free wheeling until you get the Aisans. If that doesn't fix it... well now you know it's not that. But get the manual locks anyway. Believe me, the autos suck. They disengage whenever you go in reverse. So don't get stuck and have to back up.
