So my lovely 99 sr5 started having some front end dragging noose a few weeks after I swapped my CV axles (both sides, oem cv'd ate themselves after 206k and were no rebuildable). And yes, I did torque the CV nut to the correct spec, 174ft-lb.
Anyhow. Swapped my cv's, about 3-3 1/2 weeks later I begin feeling some intermittent dragging sensation through th floorboards. Within a week I could hear some chatter with the radio and AC off, and the windows up. At first it sounded like only the driver side, but then It sounded like both sides.
When driving on pavement in a straight line, and slowly drifting one way or the other, the noise didnt change in pitch or volume, which led me to believe both sides were on their way out.
Unfortunately for my savings account, I did not have the time to yank my spindles and merely take them to the shop for pressing out/in of the bearings.
Got two different quotes from my stealership. One was cheaper on the oarts end, but more expensive on the labor end, and vice versa.
$950 for bearings, hubs, seals and c-clips, and $650 in labor after asking for a 20% military discount... (im ****ing livid)
So everythings back together.
Except I still have a grinding sensation coming from my front end, my steering wheel is canted 5-10* to the right (but it rolls straight, doesnt pull either direction when accelerating or braking), and now I have an almost... vertical... steering wheel/front end hop when braking at highway speeds.
Im ****ing livid. I had no issues with the brakes or steering before it went to the shop. No hopping or vibrating, no brake noise... my steering wheel was straight... and I still have a very definite noise increase and increase in vibration/dragging feeling through my floorboard.
The hopping when braking is new. The front end makes noise only whn drifting to the right, now.
I have both bearings and hubs, which I asked the mechanic for, so they were apparently swapped.
So, I need to diagnose these issues before I go back.
The mechanic at the stealership did his assessment of the vehicle, stated my front tires were cupped due to a worn out suspension (ome 3" lift last june... so... no.), and suggested replacement, I wasnt inpressed by his stating I will need new front brakes soon either, as I have less than 2000miles on a set of new pads, and my rotors werent warped).
Any ideas to check things out? I have a mild front diff seal leak on the driver side, will be replacing that soon, and will be happy to have the front end apart to double check everythings torqued up right... but Ive been keeping an eyebon the fluid levels, and its only needs about a 1/10 of a quart every 3-4 days... so I dont think it could be the diff bearings.
