Front end noise when in reverse and brake

I 've searched the past posts and found nothing on this.

When I back into a parking spot I hear a TINK kinda noise from the front of my Runner when I push the brake pedal.

Its nothing bad I hope, but it is annoying, to me anyways.

I have a Sonoran Steel 1.2a lift but if I remember correctly it was doing it before the lift.

If I pull forward a few feet and brake with the pedal there is no noise, but when I reverse a few feet and brake it TINKS again.

It will do this everytime.

I thought it was the front brakes, but when I've had the wheels off I have seen nothing there and the brakes are in good condition. I changed the brake pads and rotors last year with new stuff. ( I think the rotors are WAGNERS ?)

Today in the driveway I pulled forward and used the E brake to stop, (never pushing the brake pedal) and when I backed up and hit the brakes the same noise is there. So I don't think there is something loose in the brakes, but I will look at them again.

I plan on doing the lower ball joints this weekend, (but not because of this noise) and I would like to find the cause of it.

Any ideas for me on what to look for while I'm doing the LBJs?

The brake pads can move fore and aft in the calipers a bit. When you back up at slow speeds and apply the brakes, you can often hear them as they shift backwards a bit. The noise they make fits your description.

I'd be willing to bet that's what you're hearing.

Yeah I thought of that but since they have the 2 pins going thru them I didn't think they could move any. I also thought that the disc might be moving the amount that it can on the wheel studs but kinda doubt that.

I was hoping someone would read this and recognize it as something they had before.

I'll check the pads while I have it apart this weekend.

Weird, I had the same problem with my last 4runner, but it happend after I put on the lift. I THINK it was the sway bar end links... I know I fixed it after tightening/loosening something in the suspension area. It was about 6 years ago so I can't remember so clearly.

It's the pad slop

I have the same noise and it started exactly after my last brake job. I chipped away some significant rust flakes from the inside of the caliper where the pads sit and noticed right away that there was slop in the pad/caliper seating.
It was no surprise to me when I heard the clank when I hit my brakes after backing up.
Even though slide pins do guide the pads, they are no match for stopping them from moving back and forth when you clamp the brakes after backing up. They are there to keep the pads from sliding up and out of the caliper, not for locking them in place back and forth.
I am just about ready to do the Tundra brake upgrade mainly because I know my calipers are so rusted and this clanking is driving me nuts every time I back up. I might have opened the pad slot by 1/4" with the amount of rust I removed.

Interesting, Thanks.

It all makes sense, I never took the brakes apart to confirm that this is the case with mine, but it probably is and I will check it this weekend.

I too plan on doing the Tundra brake upgrade but something happened today that I will need to check out first.

I have 285/75/16 tires with just 2000 miles on them and as I was leaving work today and I ran over a small pry bar looking thing about the size of an 8 inch screwdriver. It punctured a rear tire and I had to put my spare on.

GRRRRRRRRRRR...............

My spare is a 265 /75/16, so I had to put it on the front, and then put the good front one on the rear.

The spare is on a factory steel wheel, so I'm wondering if there will be clearance problems with the Tundra brakes and that steel wheel?

I'll search for this answer but then again I may just ask the question in a new post.
