Front end shake occasionally

I've recently picked up a 98 and have a at times, a wicked front end shake while braking. It comes and goes and varies from mild to wild. I think I've narrowed it down coming from the steering rack. It seems there is some play on the driverside. There is no leakage. Has anyone experienced this and is it fixable without replacing the entire rack. Wondering if I can "tighten" something in it? Also the steering wheel does not shake at all.

Since you said it occured when braking it's got to be warped rotors. The brakes on these are undersized from the factory...

Search the Tundra Brake Upgrade and go ahead and get that done. DO NOT put any money into the stock brake system unless necessary

I had a crazy bad shake also, it would come and go but when it came, wow lol. I got some brembo slotted rotors and performance friction pads and while changing them I discovered a seized piston in one of the calipers. This was no doubt causing brake drag, which would heat and warp the rotor throughout the day. Changed it all out and even get better gas mileage!!( scangauge ). The rotors and pad combo is killer too, even though its stock size.
