FRONT LIFT: Toytec Eibach Coils vs Tundra TRD

What is the performance difference between these? I was leaning towards the tundra coils and bily 5100s because i see alot of "rides like a cadillac" and numerous threads saying the combo can be had for under $400

while i continue to try to hunt down a used set of Tundra TRD coils im pricing new ones:

NEW AF100 Coil - $123.90
NEW AF090 Coil - $123.90

a set of Toytec eibach coils is $163.99 (not including T4R discount.)

essentially half the price.

I still want to run the Tundra billies:
Bilstein 24-188-265 ($101.37ea) $202.74

Can anybody give an opinion in the difference of ride quality?
My T4R is my daily so I'm looking for the best mix of RQ and O-R ability

I have the TRD bought new. I thought they were cheaper than that though...

Either way, IMO, loaded down they ride a lot better. With no added bumpers / winches, etc. Stiff tires and the TRD springs makes for a somewhat firm ride up front. Not jarring, but firm. Helps stabilize though when you have no rear sway bar.

Billy's Tundra 5100's on 2nd perch.

I've heard the Toytecs are softer. You'd run them on the bottom perch because they are longer springs. I wanted to go this route because of cost and descibed ride, but they didn't have any and couldn't give any indication of when they would be in at the time. Eibach only sells to them (at least with that number) and I couldn't find the same springs anywhere else. I believe they also provide slightly more lift too.

Curious to hear what others say. I may swap yet.

I was talked into the Toytec coilovers and am very happy. If you plan on a front bumper and winch later you will have to change out the Eibach coils for some stiffer ones to carry the weight and still give the lift you want. However, with the coilovers, you just dial them up to get what you want.

I also think that smoothness is going to vary depending on what people are used to. If they are used to a stiff 1 ton truck, then even the stiffest springs on a 4Runner might feel caddy like to them.

looking into a 4x bumper somewhere down the road.

Right now i'm just looking for lift w/ stock bumper no winch

looking to run 275/70r17s
this will still be my DD so I'm looking for an OEM or better ride.

i have run both, and if you are planning on a bumper some time down the road get the eibachs... thats what i have now. i got my tundra coils brand new as well(my father inlaw works for a dealer, and i got them as a christmas gift but his cost was around $200 for the pair). the eibachs give a nicer ride imo, they are longer and have more travel so thats why i think people say they are softer, i dont know the spring rates for either, but for me with the added weight of armor and a bumper and a winch the TRD coils wasnt cutting it. also go with the tundra 5100s, as they have 5 perches as apposed to the tacoma's 3. -the tundra ones just offer 2 more settings in the middle to give more "fine tuning" options. -but dont go above the 3rd/middle perch with them -les schwab put mine on the 4th perch when i asked them specifically to go to the 3rd and within 1000 miles i blew both front struts...

the TRD coils will not give as much lift as the eibach coils, i was running my TRD coils on the 3rd perch and when i put the eibachs in i dropped down to the 2nd and still had more lift, even with a winch... if you are all stock at the moment id only run the eibachs on the bottom or 1st perch.

I appreciate the feedback. Thats just the kind of info i was looking for. I was worried about the small amount of lift for as much as I have to pay for the OEM parts and that fact that I already have my set of LC 8/7.5 wraps I'm not a huge fan of the rake. After read Rickshay's thread a couple of times i wanted more lift for the front end to level it out.

yeah i am running 8 wraps and i had some massive rake with the TRD coils. i think you would even have a good amount of rake with 7.5s and the TRDs.... right now with my 3/8 top hat spacer and on the 4th perch im perfectly level with no load. but as soon as i put some camping gear or the dog and kids in the truck it squats and im not happy about that or the fact that i now have two blown bilstien 5100s that i have to swap out(thankfully bilstien has a lifetime warrenty on them and is gonna cover me but i still either have to swap them myself or pay someone to do and get another alignment... i think with all my weight and on the 3rd perch and the 3/8 top hat spacer i should sit about 1/3"-1/2" lower in the front than the rear and thats perfect for me, cause then i should sit level with some load

The primary difference between the springs is that the TRD tundras are progressive whereas the Eibachs are a straight rate (I believe 600#?) spring. This is my understanding, anyway. I have no experience with the toytec setup, but the TRD springs are "firm" but not jarring with no extra weight up front.

Makes sense and youre right TRDs are PR and the Eibach coils in the picture above are 620lb

SO my next question, what is the difference here:

are these the same springs, just the more expensive coilover set comes with an adjustible top and spanner wrench??

****************************************************

which makes me ask another question, the coil over kit above with tundra billies vs the toytec front coilovers below, whats the difference??

Wow, I thought this thread was old since I found it via google, and have the exact same question and reasoning. The TRD coils are EXPENSIVE! I already bought the Tundra 5100s but was holding off trying to find cheap TRD coils but no luck for under $260/set and figured I'd look into the Eibach. And exact same question about the spanner wrench coil set vs normal coil set.

Great timing on this question and thanks for the answers! :bounce:

Also:

and im not happy about that or the fact that i now have two blown bilstien 5100s that i have to swap out(thankfully bilstien has a lifetime warrenty on them and is gonna cover me

Are you running the Tundra 5100s? I just bought the front/rear Tundra pack from Down South Motorsports, and I specified I was using it on a 4Runner (to explain I needed different bushings in the rear) and they put on the receipt that I don't have warranty. Are you getting warranty directly through Bilstein, or are you getting it through who you bought it from? It would suck if I don't get warranty because I was truthful about the application, but oh well...

I can go either way... I called bilstien first to see what they said, and they told me to go through whom ever I purchased them from and if they gave me any hassle(cause I had a lift and bigger tires and a winch) then to call bilstien back and deal directly with them and their customer service dept. I didnt tell them I was using tundra parts on a 4runner, just told them what part and what vehicle I ordered it for... Any time you frankenstein a vehicle the companies don't like to offer warranties... It's not really being dishonest if you ask me, how does putting that part on a smaller vehicle all of the sudden make it not usable ect. The company is just looking for a way to not have to pay for anything if something is defective... I just let them think I own a 2005 trd tundra, that's what I ordered parts for they don't need to know what I put the parts on...

Bottom line bilstien will cover the struts if they ever go bad, just tell them the strut is for a tundra and send it in

Another "problem" with lift in the front is CV angle.

Less lift = Happier CV's. Real world I dont know how it will affect them with the extra lift, but it's something to consider.

After much reading I'm starting to get a handle on what it is that I'm looking for. Its been a steep learning curve but thanks to this forum I will graduate from newbness in no time lol.
I was wondering which bili do you use on rear? The 5100 for lifted toyota or adjustable 5100? And they should be tundra bili's on rear as well? Ive read a bunch o posts about lifts and what not but they not too many details re rear.

Or just order them through Sonoran Steel and get a full warranty.

You get normal shocks in the back. The adjustability is just for coilovers since you are changing the preload on the coil, which you can't do in the back since the coil and shocks are independent.

I used Rickshays TRD vs OME thread for figuring a lot out, and ordered a Tundra 5100 shock set from Down South motors sports for $360, and that's front and rear as a set.

So asking my original question again, does anybody have some knowledge on what the differences are? Whats the reasoning behind the price jump from $610 to $750 between the two sets of coilovers.

Are these sets going to give me enough extra value to consider buying them over buying the eibach springs or Tundra Springs and buying the bilstein 5100s separately? The ToyTec website doesn't give a good description of whats different between them.

The main difference is going to be the top hat. With the kit, you have to reuse the stock Toyota top hat. With the coilovers, it's billit aluminum and can pivot more to provide more articulation.

Dont know if it matters much now, but I ordered the Eibach springs by themselves, and paired them with Tundra 5100's with a new top hat from my local auto store, because getting the ones off the stock coil overs wasn't going to happen; they were far too rusty to re use. Assembly required some compressors but that wasn't a big deal.

And when it came to cv angles, the 1 inch drop took no more than 15 min to install, and IMO make a huge difference.
